Chapter 461 Hospital Vigil

Evelyn gave her some sugar water and fanned her gently.

“We should get her to a hospital,” Anthony said.

Bonita spoke up, “I’ll bring the car around!”

Evelyn and Emily said in unison, “We can’t lift her on our own.”

Isabelle looked toward Anthony and said, “Anthony.”

After a brief pause, Anthony bent down, gathered Daisy into his arms without hesitation, and headed for the door.

Bonita drove while Isabelle sat in the passenger seat. Anthony was in the back, holding Daisy steady, his gaze fixed on the side of her neck.

There was a tiny red birthmark.

It was her.

Anthony reached out and brushed her hair aside, his thumb gently grazing over that small mark.

It really was her.

Isabelle happened to glance back and caught the motion.

Anthony quickly withdrew his hand.

“Is she going to be okay?” Isabelle asked.

“Her pulse is thready. They’ll give her some fluids at the hospital, and she should come around after a day or two of rest,” Anthony replied, looking down at her. “Did anyone call her brother?”

“Already did,” Isabelle said.

Anthony nodded.

In his arms, Daisy furrowed her brows, trying but failing to open her eyes. She stirred restlessly, breathing in shallow, uncomfortable pants.

The car’s air conditioning was on full blast, and the windows were down.

She reached out and clutched a fistful of Anthony’s suit jacket.

“I feel awful…” she managed to force out the words.

It felt like her head was splitting, her breathing grew more ragged, and she couldn’t seem to get enough air.

“Take slow breaths. Try not to move.”

Anthony’s calm, measured voice reached her, and she seemed to understand, trying to follow his instruction.

When they arrived at the hospital, she was taken straight to the emergency triage area. Isabelle couldn’t keep up with Anthony’s long strides, and Bonita had gone to park the car.

Anthony placed her on a gurney in the ER, but Daisy’s hand was still tightly fisted in his jacket, refusing to let go.

His phone kept vibrating in his pocket.

With no other choice, he slipped out of the jacket and draped it over her

A nearby nurse quickly began checking her vitals and fired off a few questions to Anthony about her condition.

Anthony didn’t know much–only that she hadn’t eaten all morning and had been working outside in the heat since dawn.

The nurse seemed to piece it together and drew the curtain around the bed, asking him to wait outside.

He stood in the hallway just as Isabelle caught up, slightly breathless.

“How is she?” Isabelle asked.

“She should be fine,” Anthony replied, gesturing for her to take a seat in the waiting area.

That’s a relief,” Isabelle said, wiping her sweaty palms on her jeans. The scare had gotten to her.

“When is her family getting here?” Anthony asked.

“Should be any minute. Her brother was already on the road when I called. I told him to come straight to the ER.”

“I need to go,” Anthony said.

He didn’t want too many people to see him or to know he was the one who had carried her in. His current… situation wasn’t something he wanted scrutinized.

“Alright,” Isabelle replied.

Anthony stood and walked toward the exit.

Isabelle noticed he’d left his jacket behind.

As Anthony walked out through the automatic doors, he accidentally bumped shoulders with a man rushing in.

“Excuse me!” the man said, flustered, as he hurried past.

Anthony glanced back, gave a slight, almost imperceptible nod, and instantly recognized him–it was Daisy’s father.

He had a vague memory of him from years ago.

He watched the man’s retreating back for a brief moment before turning to leave.

“Mr. Clark,” Isabelle called out, standing up as she spotted Adrian Clark looking around anxiously near the nurse’s station.

Isabelle recognized Adrian from Joseph’s bar opening, when he had stopped by briefly.

“Isabelle,” Adrian said, his face lined with worry as he walked over. “Where’s Daisy? How is she?”
