Chapter 525 What Kind of Person Is Lucas?

Lucas was at a loss.

I don’t want to call off the engagement. I feel like I’ve made that pretty obvious. So why is Lynn still unhappy?

Not long ago, she couldn’t wait to get married.

Lynn went to the bar to look for Daisy. Daisy was usually there at night, but she wasn’t around that day.

Lynn sat at the bar, looking dejected.

“What brings you here?” Joseph asked, sliding a freshly made tequila sunrise toward her.

She hadn’t been in for a while. The last time, Lucas had come and practically carried her out.

Joseph remembered that clearly. Lucas hadn’t been gentle.

Lynn smiled, “Missed you. That’s all.” She was always joking like that.

Lynn, Daisy, and Joseph had grown up together; their parents were acquainted. When Lynn’s family was trying to set her up, Joseph had been on the list.

But her father, Gordon, had refused, all because he didn’t like tattoos–he thought they were for troublemakers.

Lynn felt Gordon was judging a book by its cover. Joseph had a gentle face and dressed like a proper, conservative gentleman, but he had a tattoo on his arm.

When Lynn visited him in the hospital once, the nurses couldn’t even find a vein for an IV.

Gordon held that against him. Even though Joseph was polite and no one could point to any bad habits, he just couldn’t win Gordon over.

Joseph smiled, “You’re not even drunk yet.”

Lynn picked up the glass and took a small sip. “Where’s Daisy?”

“Columbus Day is coming up. She’s busy with ad campaigns. She’s never around anymore. Looks like she’s doomed to be single,” Joseph joked.

“And you’re doomed to be single too, sleeping all day and drinking all night,” she teased back, playing with her glass.

Joseph’s gaze rested gently on her perfectly made–up face. “Yeah. It is a bit hard to find a wife,” he said softly.

Lynn drank alone until late into the night. Joseph watched her from the side until she finally slumped over the bar, toying with her empty glass.

“Does Lucas know you’re out drinking?” Joseph asked. He and Lucas knew each other, and they were pretty good friends.

Lynn raised an eyebrow at him. “Tell me, what kind of person is Lucas?”

“A good guy. Loyal,” Joseph said without hesitation.

Lynn let out a short, dry laugh. Lucas was loyal–to his friends.

Joseph sat down, poured her a glass of juice, and took the empty cocktail glass from her hand. “Did he make you mad?”

“Nothing to be mad about,” Lynn said, sitting up straight and downing the juice in one go.

Joseph could see a hint of sadness in her eyes.

“I heard you called off the engagement a while back. So now…” he trailed off.

Lynn looked at Joseph seriously. “If it were you, would you marry someone you don’t like?”

Joseph placed his hands on the bar, intertwining his fingers as he thought. Then he answered honestly, “No.”

“What if you liked her, but she didn’t like you?” Lynn asked.

Joseph’s hands stilled for a second. “If I liked her and she didn’t like me, I’d try to make her like me.”

Lynn shook her head. “That’s too pathetic.”

Joseph just smiled.

“Come here,” Lynn said, looking curiously at Joseph’s arm.

Joseph leaned closer.

Lynn pointed. “Can I see?”

He paused, then pulled up his sleeve and held his arm out for her.

Lynn leaned in. The tattoo wasn’t just decorative. His arm had a burn scar, and the tattoo covered the wrinkled skin. She’d never really noticed it before.

“This scar…” Lynn couldn’t help but reach out, her fingertip tracing over it.

Joseph’s expression turned a bit heavier, and he started to pull his sleeve back down.

He explained, “Got it during a school field trip to the countryside. Lucas was the one who helped me.”

Joseph was about to say more when his gaze shifted from her face to a spot behind her. Lucas, dressed in casual clothes, was standing right there.
