Chapter 526 Watch the Sunrise

Lynn sat in the passenger seat, her head resting against the window, watching Lucas as he was ory a call nearby.
He looked back at her. In the dim light, she seemed half–asleep, her face flushed, a few stray strands of hair drifting across her cheek in the breeze.
He ended the call and walked over to her.
“Feeling sick?” Lucas asked.
Lynn shook her head, her cheek still pressed to the cool glass. “I want to watch the sunrise,” she mumbled.
Lucas glanced at her, then nodded. “Okay.”
It was already two in the morning.
Lucas drove along the winding mountain road. Lynn stayed leaning against the window, the night air whipping through her hair. The car was filled with the faint scent of her perfume.
They reached the summit over an hour later. The sky was pitch black, not a star in sight.
Lucas knew this area from his search and rescue work–he knew the safest spot, the best view. But sunrise was still hours away.
Lynn got out of the car. The wind up here was much cooler than in the city. A steady, chilly breeze swept under the hem of her dress, making the fine hairs on her legs stand on end.
She hugged herself, looking out over the familiar city below. Most of the towering buildings had gone dark, the city slowly falling asleep.
Lucas opened the trunk and pulled a clean jacket from a bag.
Lynn turned to look at him. I’m crazy. Dragging Lucas up a mountain in the middle of the night to watch the
sunrise.
The night wasn’t even over, and she was already waiting for dawn. I’m getting ahead of myself.
Lucas laid a couple of newspapers on a nearby bench, then draped the jacket over her shoulders.
She looked up at him. In the hazy darkness, she couldn’t make out his expression, but she felt a tiny electric spark where his fingernail accidentally grazed her skin as he adjusted the jacket.
Lynn knew she was still pretty drunk. I want to kiss Lucas.
But she didn’t dare. Her face grew warm. Despite the cool breeze raising goosebumps on her skin, a restless heat churned inside her.
When Lucas stepped closer, he kept his eyes from wandering. She’d left the house wearing very little–just a slip dress that ended above her knees.

The wind caught it, and her legs were clearly visible in the moonlight. He had good eyesight; he didn’t have to look hard to see her clearly in this light.
“It’s cold out. You can wait in the car if you want,” Lucas suggested.
Sunrise was still a while off. The last thing he needed was for her to get sick. Tomorrow was his grandfather’s birthday party, and he’d been specifically told to bring Lynn.
That gave him a perfect excuse to come find her tonight. He also wanted to ease the tension that had sprung up between them.
Lynn made a soft sound of acknowledgment but didn’t move to go back. She turned around again, gazing into the distance, as if some of the sadness in her heart had begun to fade.
Lucas stood beside her, blocking the chilly wind for her.
Lynn glanced at him from the corner of her eye. He was blocking the wind, and the moonlight too. From her angle, his profile looked so perfectly handsome it seemed unreal.
Lucas knew she was looking. He met her gaze.
Lynn slowly looked away.
So did Lucas.
“Why the sudden urge to see the sunrise?” he asked.
A small smile touched Lynn’s lips as she remembered what Daisy had said, “They say if you watch the sunrise with someone you love, you’ll be happy forever.”
She didn’t say it out loud. She just pulled his large jacket tighter around herself. It still carried his unique, clean scent, the same one she’d noticed on his sheets.
Now, standing upwind of him, she could even catch a hint of it on the breeze. She rubbed the fabric of his suit jacket between her fingers.
Lynn had rarely seen Lucas in a suit. He mostly wore casual clothes, or she’d catch a glimpse of him in a suit on the news. It surprised her that he kept one in his trunk.
Isabelle and Damian had said that Lucas rarely went home when he returned from business trips. He usually went straight to the office.
If Lynn hadn’t moved into the villa, he probably would have rarely set foot in the place.
Lucas looked down at her secretly. He didn’t really get the appeal of sunrises. But standing here quietly beside her, waiting for dawn together, suddenly felt meaningful.
The meaning wasn’t just in watching the sunrise, but in being with her. Even doing nothing felt peaceful.
That was probably why he hadn’t wanted to call off the engagement.
