Lucas explained, “Sandy liked me back then. Charles liked her. After an accident, Sandy mistook/Charles for me. They drank, she got pregnant, and they had a shotgun wedding. It’s true. “There won’t be any ‘more,’ Lucas. Don’t push it!” Lynn said. She pulled the remote and batteries from a drawer. “Do it yourself.”

Lucas looked at the remote and batteries on the desk, then glanced over at her.

Lynn had known he was lying that night. She had just chosen to play along.

Lynn left the study. Lucas quietly put the batteries into the remote behind her.

Lynn didn’t want to stay upstairs. Lucas wasn’t the reserved man he used to be. He’d gotten a taste, and now he wanted more whenever he had the chance.

Downstairs, she saw a maid about to throw out the herbal medicine dregs. It hit her that Sandy had just drunk her medicine.
