“Okay,” the maid said, handing the herbal medicine dregs to Lynn.

Lynn didn’t want to handle it openly, afraid of stirring up gossip.

Her hand trembled slightly. She was about to check it but saw Lucas watching her, so she put the phone down.

“What’s up? Messaging some other guy I’m not allowed to know about?” Lucas teased.

Lynn forced a smile. “Girl talk. Not for guys to see.” She was scrambling for an excuse.

Lucas nodded, assuming it was Daisy again. “Go ahead and chat,” he said, waving a hand dismissively as he went to his desk.

Lynn quickly opened her phone. It was a message from Taylor.

“It does have a contraceptive effect.”

Lynn’s hand shook. She glanced at Lucas, who was now at his desk.

She clutched her phone. This huge secret felt like a weight on her shoulders. She wanted to tell someone, but she didn’t dare say a word. She had to keep it to herself.

Lucas worked. Lynn lay on the recliner by the floor–to–ceiling window, quietly looking outside.

“How do you want me to dress?” he asked.

Lynn shook her head. She didn’t want anyone to change for her. Even for her future partner, she hoped he would just be himself.
