Taylor smiled. “I was in the neighborhood, thought I’d drop by and see you. Brought you something.”
Lynn unlocked the clinic door and let her in. Taylor knew she had a full morning ahead, so he settled into a chair in the corner and watched quietly as Lynn worked through her patients.
After a few consultations, the waiting room finally emptied. Lynn turned to Taylor with a curious look
“So what’s this thing you brought me?”
Taylor’s expression shifted–something careful, almost tender–and he reached into his bag, pulling out a worn, handwritten medical journal.
Lynn’s smile turned awkward. “Dr. Hibbard, come on. This is your family’s legacy. I can’t take that.”
She knew that book. Taylor kept it in his study at home, and on normal days, he wouldn’t even let Lynn touch it.
“I don’t have much time left.” Taylor said quietly, holding the book out to her. I know my own body. No children, no family to speak of. This book is the thing I’m proudest of. Giving it to you–it feels right. Like I’ve finished what I needed to do.”
“Don’t talk like that.” Lynn reached for Taylor’s wrist, fingers pressing gently against his pulse. Her eyes went distant for a moment, focused.
Taylor just smiled, unbothered. “Hey, look on the bright side. If I keep a good attitude. I’ve still got a year or two in me. Maybe more.” He squeezed Lynn’s hand. I’m heading upstate tomorrow with an old colleague. He’s got a place near a retreat center–quiet, good for reflection. We’ll see each other again if
we’re meant to.”
Lynn opened her mouth to argue, but before she could get a word out, a knock came at the door.
She looked up.
Lucas stood there, one hand raised from knocking, the other holding his suit jacket. He wore a burgundy dress shirt under a black vest, a tie knotted neatly at his throat.
Lynn blinked. She’d seen him in a suit before–for their engagement photos, for the day they got their marriage license–but not often. And never like this.
The vest hugged his chest in a way that was almost unfair. That one–fifteen chest measurement wasn’t just a number; the fabric strained slightly, struggling to contain him.
Last night, when she’d had the courage to let her hands wander, she’d gotten a better sense of just how solid he was. And when he slept–relaxed, soft–the feeling had been even better.
Her pulse kicked up unexpectedly. When she spoke, her voice came out softer than she’d intended. “You’re
here
Taylor caught the shift in Lynn’s expression immediately and turned to look at the man in the doorway.

Lucas nodded politely at her.
“Should I come back later?” he asked.
Taylor waved a hand. “No need. Sit down. Let me take a look at you while I’m here.”
Let me take a look at you?
Taylor’s professional instincts had clearly kicked in.
Lucas glanced at Lynn. When their eyes met, color rose in her cheeks.

He smiled and took a seat. It had taken him a while, but he’d finally started piecing together what she liked.
She’d mentioned once that she had a thing for men in shirts. At the time, he hadn’t thought much of it- hadn’t really understood what she meant. Now he got it.
And those guys she’d scrolled past on her phone, the ones she’d lingered on–they’d all been wearing suits Well–tailored ones.
A few weeks ago, she’d asked him, out of nowhere, “Why do you always dress so casually?”
Now he knew what she’d really been asking.
He just didn’t wear suits often. The one hanging in his car was practically the same one he’d worn for months.
“This is Dr. Hibbard,” Lynn said, pulling herself together.
Lucas inclined his head. “Dr. Hibbard. Nice to meet you.”
Taylor reached across the desk, grabbed Lynn’s computer wrist rest, and slid it in front of Lucas. He tapped the desk twice. “Hand.”
Lucas blinked, then unfastened his cuff, rolled back his sleeve, and rested his wrist on the rest.
Taylor’s fingers found his pulse.
“You nervous?” she asked after a moment.
“No.”
“Your heart rate’s pushing a hundred–twenty.”
A pause. “A little.”
Lynn bit back a smile. A little?
She hadn’t expected Lucas to get nervous just from coming to see her.
Taylor gestured for his other hand. Lucas complied without a word.
