“Dr. Murphy.” Lucas leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. “You’re going to have to explain this to me. What exactly is going on with my health?”
Lynn kept her eyes on the computer screen. “Dr. Hibbard said you should eat more vegetables.”
Lucas let out a short laugh. “Really? I’m more of a meat person. Haven’t had much lately, actually.”
Lynn’s face stayed neutral, but inside she was flustered. The way he’d said that–right in front of her, with that look–made it impossible not to read something else into it. She grabbed the mouse and started clicking through his file, anything to avoid meeting his eyes.
Lucas settled back in his chair, crossing one leg over the other, watching her work like he had all the time in the world.
Lynn’s palms started to sweat. Outwardly calm. Inwardly? A complete disaster.
Lucas sat up straighter, shoulders back, chest out like he was posing for something. A peacock showing off.
Lynn wanted to look. Didn’t dare.
The printer hummed and spat out his referral form. Lynn grabbed it and held it out to him. “Once your tests are done, bring the results back and I’ll go over them with you.”
Instead of taking the paper, Lucas took her hand–the one holding it. “Dr. Murphy. You didn’t really think I came all the way here just for a checkup, did you?”
Lynn’s eyes darted toward the waiting room. People out there. But from their angle, the computer monitor blocked them perfectly. No one could see.
“Then why-”
Lucas‘ gaze dropped to her ear. The earring she was wearing–one of the ones he’d left at her place that night. When he’d stayed over, he’d brought a few things.
Rings, mostly. He hadn’t known her size, so he’d ordered several different styles and slipped them into her drawer along with some earrings and a necklace. Figured she’d find them eventually.
She must have discovered them recently. Maybe this morning, when she was getting ready.
Lynn followed his gaze, realized what he was looking at, and pulled her hand back.
He was right. She’d only found everything today, when she opened the drawer to pick out jewelry.
Lucas smiled, finally taking the referral slip from her. He glanced at it. “Weak kidneys?”
Lynn froze. “No… that’s not-”
Why would he jump to that? There was nothing deficient about him. If anything-

Then what’s wrong with me?” He tilted his head, all innocence. “You’re supposed to treat the root cause. right?”
Lynn mumbled something under her breath. “There’s nothing wrong with you. You don’t need treatment.”
She realized how that sounded and quickly corrected herself. “I mean–you don’t need major adjustments.”
Lucas‘ mouth twitched. “Doesn’t sound like Dr. Murphy is very confident in her diagnosis. Maybe I should go find Dr. Hibbard. If I head downstairs now, I might still catch him.”
Lynn grabbed his wrist before he could stand. “Don’t–don’t cause a scene.”
Two patients were already waiting in the hall.
Lucas crossed his legs again, looking for all the world like a man perfectly content to be a nuisance.
Through the glass door, Lynn could see people glancing over. She lowered her voice. “I’ll tell you. But you have to leave right after.”
She was half–convinced he might try to kiss her right here in the office if she didn’t get him out soon.
Lucas hummed thoughtfully, then nodded. Fine by him. He’d have to come back after the tests anyway. He could bother her more then.
Lynn’s cheeks went pink. “Taylor said you have an extremely strong, fiery constitution.”
Lucas frowned. “What does that mean?”
Lynn pointed at his phone. “Look it up.”
Lucas stared at her. “You’re telling me to Google my own diagnosis?”
Doctors used WebMD now? Seemed a little… unprofessional.
Before he could ask more, Lynn had already called the next patient. A middle–aged woman walked in. settling into the chair Lucas had just vacated.
Lucas hesitated, then stood, slipping the referral into his pocket. He’d get answers eventually.
Lynn exhaled slowly once he was gone. Next time, she was not letting him come in for a “checkup“. Lucas had way too much nerve.
She reached for his jacket–still draped over the chair where he’d left it. Warm from his body. Without thinking, she hung it on the back of her own chair and leaned against it, pressing it between her shoulders and the seat.
Only then did she focus on the patient in front of her.
Outside, Lucas handed the referral to his assistant with instructions to get in line. Then he pulled out his phone and opened a browser.

He typed, “Extremely strong, fiery constitution.”
He read for a moment, then smiled to himself.
