Lucas had left in a hurry, and the trash can in the guest room hadn’t been emptied yet–she’d just thrown something away in there.

Good thing she did. If Daisy had seen that, she’d never hear the end of it.

Daisy didn’t push. One look at Lynn’s flushed face and she already had her answer.

“Aren’t you worried people will talk, showing up here right now?” Lynn asked.

Daisy was her oldest friend, but with everything going on, being seen at the Murphys‘ place was bound to stir up gossip.

“Let them talk. It’s not like I haven’t been through that before.” Daisy’s expression flickered.

Lynn paused and let it go.

Daisy had dealt with plenty of rumors after what happened ten years ago, and Lynn had always been there for her.

She’d even gotten into fights defending Daisy back in school. Daisy remembered that. She wasn’t about to abandon Lynn now.

“Does your dad know you’re here?”

Daisy nodded. “Yeah. He said if that heartless Lucas even thinks about kicking you out, you’ve got a place with us. My brother even cleared out a room for you two.”

Lynn’s eyes stung. She dropped the pillow, moved closer to Daisy, and hugged her.

“Hey, don’t cry. Your eyes are already swollen,” Daisy said, rubbing her back.

Years ago, it had been Daisy crying in Lynn’s arms until her own eyes were puffy.

Daisy smirked. “But Lucas isn’t exactly innocent here. After everything last night, he still couldn’t leave you alone this morning?”

Lynn felt heat creep up her neck. She leaned back on the couch, wiped her eyes, and mumbled. T–um… I

started it.”

Daisy’s eyebrows shot up. “You started it?”

“Yeah.”

“You’re serious? You made the first move?”

Lynn repeated. “I started it”

“Okay, that’s different. If he’d pushed for more after everything that happened yesterday, that would’ve

been out of line.”

Lynn stayed quiet.

Daisy tilted her head, curious. “So why’d you do it?”

“I think I actually really like him.”

She could’ve said she was trying to show gratitude, but that wasn’t it. Not really.

She genuinely liked Lucas.

And with her family falling apart, dragging things out with him felt wrong–unfair to him, and ungrateful on her part.

Daisy’s face softened into a small smile. “Well, that’s how it should be.”

“What are you smiling at?”

“Because someone’s finally looking after you. Loving you.”

Daisy had known Lucas for years too. They’d never been close, but his reputation was solid.

And now that he was standing by the Murphys through all this, maybe some good would come out of it after all.

The door opened while they were talking. Petra walked in alone.

Lynn and Daisy stood up.

“Petra.” Lynn forced the word out. She didn’t want to see her, but Petra was Lucas‘ mother. She had to be polite.

Petra looked uncomfortable.

After Lynn had exposed what happened with Sandy, and after Petra had tried to cut the Murphys loose. the gracious, polished image she’d maintained was gone.

Charles had moved out with Sandy. Lucas barely came around anyway. The house felt empty now like a building than a home.

“Sit down.” Petra’s voice was tight.

It was obvious she hadn’t slept much either

Daisy and Lynn sat back down.

Lynn glanced at Daisy, trying to signal that she should leave them alone.
