He realized he couldn’t really remember seeing Lynn smile much–and genuine smiles directed at him
were even rarer.
Without thinking, he walked over, picked up the photo and studied it closely. He pulled out his phone. took a picture of it, then cropped it so only Lynn remained in the frame.
“Click.”
The bathroom door opened.
Lucas quickly set the photo back in place and slipped his phone into his pocket before turning around. Lynn was stepping out, holding a bundle of dirty clothes.
Thinking it was Joseph, she startled and took a step back. Once her eyes focused and she realized it was Lucas, the clothes in her hands dropped to the floor.
She rushed toward him, jumped up, wrapped her arms around his neck, and hooked her legs around his
waist.
“You’re finally back.” Lynn buried her face in the crook of his neck, nuzzling against him.
“I’m back.”
Her sudden embrace caught him off guard, but he couldn’t deny the warmth that came with being missed.
He supported her with one hand under her thigh and gently patted her back with the other, breathing in the strong scent of shampoo from her hair.
Lynn looked up at him and couldn’t resist giving him a firm, heartfelt kiss.
“I missed you.”
Her nose tingled with emotion. She tightened her hold around his neck, and tears began to fall, one after another.
Warm drops seeped into the fabric of Lucas‘ shirt.
“Hey, why are you crying? I’m here now, aren’t I?”
Lynn still clung to him, unwilling to let go.
“Has it only been two weeks since I left? Did you miss me this much already Lucas leaned his forehead against hers, gazing into her tear–filled eyes.
Lynn held him even tighter. Suddenly, she felt that as ing as Lucas was here, no matter how rough things got, she’d feel safe and at peace.

But the second she saw Lucas, all the pent–up hurt came rushing out, completely beyond her control
In that moment, something stirred in her heart–a sudden sense of belonging.
Lucas was her anchor.
“Someone was awful to me today.” Lynn’s voice trembled with tears as she complained to Lucas for the first
time.
Her tears fell like an unbroken thread, streaming down continuously.
Unable to hold back, she poured out all the hurt she’d been carrying inside.
Lucas carried her over to the nearby armchair and sat down, holding her close as he softly stroked her
hair.
“No one’s ever going to treat you like that again.”
He’ll have my back from now on.
That was what Lynn understood from his words.
But there would still be times when he wasn’t around, like today.
She wiped her tears and finally loosened her grip. It was only then that she noticed the bruise on Lucas forehead.
It wasn’t fresh–more like an injury that had swollen a few days ago and was only now beginning to fade. “Did you get into another fight?” Lynn asked, her heart aching as she gently touched his forehead.
“Just bumped into something by accident.” Lucas smiled, using his thumb to wipe the tear stains from her cheeks.
“You always say you bumped into something.” She grumbled, lightly punching his chest.
Lucas caught her hand before she could hit him again. It won’t happen again.”
Lynn knew better than to believe that. He was just saying what she wanted to hear.
“Okay, we should head out. This is Joseph’s room
