“Who is your boss?” Daisy asked, intrigued by the polite stranger. After all, that was a Mercedes–Benz, and both their cars were brand new.
“My boss is…”
Mr. Vale, of course!
Before Thomas could finish, Joseph’s call came in.
“Where are you? Are you hurt?”
“How did you know so fast?” Hearing Joseph’s voice made Daisy feel a little better.
But she also felt a sense of helplessness, like a child caught by a parent right after misbehaving.
She gave Joseph the address.
“I’m fine, just a little scared.”
“Scared of what? It’s your boyfriend’s car. Crash it if you want!” Joseph chuckled. “You really are something. A brand–new car, and your boyfriend, you just go ahead and crash it!”
Daisy froze.
It’s him!
Anthony had just gotten out of the car, still holding his laptop. His gaze drifted toward Daisy. After a few seconds, the voice in his earpiece said in an Engster woman’s accent, “Anthony, are you still there?”
He looked away and said into the phone, “Give me five minutes. I’ll send it to you when I get back to the office.”
“Please hurry. We’ve been waiting a long time.”
“Okay.”
He got back in the car. From the rearview mirror, he saw Daisy turn around looking for him.
She didn’t see him.
A taxi passed by.
“Stay there. I’ll pick you up,” Joseph said with a smile.
“Okay.” Daisy stood there dumbly.
Upon arriving. Joseph greeted Thomas, posed a few simple questions, handed over Daisy’s driver’s license and other paperwork, and then approached her.

“Scared stiff?” he asked, patting her head. “You’ve had your license for five years and still rear–ended someone. You really are something.”
Daisy looked like she was about to cry.
Joseph stopped teasing her and ruffled her hair. “Alright, let’s go home. I had Mom cook up a big meal You need to regain your strength.”
“Joseph.” Daisy pouted. “Can’t you just comfort me?”
Joseph just teased her clumsiness again.
He got into the car, and she followed. “Comfort you? That’s your boyfriend’s job.”
“Don’t tell anyone when we get home,” Daisy didn’t want another scolding.
“Okay, I won’t say a word.”
Just moments ago, Joseph had been preparing to go to the bar when he got a call from an unknown. number.
The man’s voice was calm and direct. “Ivy rear–ended someone. Come pick her up.”
Before Joseph could ask anything, the man hung up.
He’d tried calling Daisy first, but she hadn’t answered. She’d been too panicked to notice her phone ringing.
Joseph recalled that she’d gone to the hospital with Lynn to visit Isabelle, so he called Lynn instead and asked about the unknown number.
Lucas, who was beside her, confirmed that it belonged to Anthony.
Joseph then called Daisy once more.
As she listened to his explanation, her mind went completely blank.
She stayed silent the entire way home.
“Do you have a dinner engagement tonight?” Joseph asked.
She nodded. She had a dinner engagement at the Westperch Hotel, but it was still early.
“Should I drive you later?” he offered.
She murmured yes.
When they got home, Priscilla came out of the kitchen with a pot of soup.
“Ugh.” Daisy grimaced. “I really don’t like this stuff.”
