Daisy leaned toward him. “Do you have Grace’s family’s number? Someone should come get/her.”

Joseph didn’t look at her. “No.”

“I’ll go check on her.” Joseph walked away without even saying congratulations.

Daisy sighed.

Lucas took Lynn to the hospital.

Anthony arrived to pick Daisy up.

“Both asleep?” He leaned down and tapped each of his little girls on the nose.

“They fall asleep every time I take them out.” Daisy stood beside him. “They stay awake longer when they’re with you.”

Anthony glanced at her. “Got it. I’ll make more time for you all.”

“I wasn’t complaining.” She knew he’d overthink it. “They just like you.”

“I know,” He smiled, then carefully lifted Lyra.

Daisy picked up Luna.

The nanny folded the stroller and followed behind.

“I haven’t told my brother yet.” Daisy looked back.

“He’s a grown man. Don’t worry about him.” Anthony didn’t look back.

They got into the van.

Joseph walked into the acupuncture room. Grace was sitting on the bed, drinking warm water.

“Feeling better?”

“Yes. Thank you.” Grace looked at him, a little scared.

“Do you have any friends who could come check on you?”

She gave a tight smile. “No one’s around here.”

Joseph nodded.

Her grandfather was in the hospital. Her grandmother stayed home most of the time and rarely went out. Her sister and her husband had probably gone back to work after the holidays.

The old villa across the street had been quiet for a while.

“I’ll take you home,” Joseph said.

“That’s okay. I’ll call a cab.”

“I need to know where you live. Your family isn’t here. If something happens, someone should be able to check on you.”

“No need.” She looked down, afraid to meet his eyes.

No way. She wasn’t about to let him check on her.

Joseph watched her.

He’d called his father and asked for her family’s contact info. Adrian had told him her parents had died in a car accident less than six months ago. That was why her grandfather had insisted she spend the holidays

here.

She was moving here this year.

She was completely alone.

Joseph didn’t say anything else. He walked out and let her rest.

A while later, Grace got out of bed and folded the blanket.

She walked outside. Joseph was standing in the courtyard, holding a bag of herbal medicine, staring into

space.

Bailey walked past and said to her, “Your medicine is with Joseph. He already paid.”

“Thank you.” Grace pulled her jacket tighter.

The weather wasn’t cold, but after throwing up, she felt chilled to the bone.

Joseph heard them talking and turned to face her.

Grace walked toward him.

Joseph noticed her shivering. He took off his long suit jacket and tossed it to her. “Put this on.”

Grace jumped and caught it with both hands.

The jacket was heavy. She was still weak. It sank in her arms, and she stumbled.

Grace muttered under her breath, “So bossy. Hope I don’t throw up in your car.”
