A few million wasn’t pocket change to them, but to Lydia and Logan, it was a substantial chunk of income.

Meanwhile, Joseph sat on the floor in front of the floor–to–ceiling window of the empty penthouse. The hard, cold floor was uncomfortable as hell, but he stayed put, waiting.

Downstairs, Grace dragged her heavy body out of bed. The first thing she saw was a glass of warm water of the nightstand.

She drank it, then walked out of the room. Joseph was gone.

A message waited on her phone. “I’m upstairs. Call me if you need anything.”

She looked at the pot of soup on the stove, ate a big bowl, and kept glancing at the coat on the rack. After a moment’s hesitation, she took it down and walked out the door.

She rang the bell of the penthouse.

Joseph had been zoning out. The doorbell snapped him back. He stood up quickly, straightening his clothes as he walked.

He looked through the camera. It was her. She was only holding his coat–the long one, not the work jacket.

He opened the door.

“Your coat. It’s pressed.” Her voice was soft. “The other one is in the wash. I got it wet earlier.”

“Fine.” He held the door wide open and took the coat from her.

Grace glanced inside. The place was empty.

“You live here?” She sounded incredulous.

Joseph grunted, “My parents are hounding me to get married. I needed a break. Turns out the place is stripped bare.”

Grace couldn’t help laughing, “So you’re staying in a hotel tonight?”

Joseph’s eyes lingered on her for a few seconds. Then he grunted again, “Probably for a while.”

“Oh.” Grace ran out of things to say.

She couldn’t invite a man she barely knew into her apartment. She’d just gotten rid of one useless man. The last thing she wanted was another one hanging around.

They stood there, facing each other awkwardly.

“Go home and rest. Call me if you need anything. I’ll be staying at a hotel nearby until the furniture arrives. If you need help, let me know.”

“Thanks for today,” she said.

“It was nothing.”

“Then… I’ll head downstairs.” She bit her lip. The air between them had shifted–their eyes locked for a beat too long, and something about it felt strange.

“Well. I’ll head down too. I need to leave anyway.” There was nowhere for him to stay here. He’d find a hotel and make do.

They stepped into the elevator.

The doors opened one floor down. Grace started to step out and saw him again. Her ex. He was pacing in front of her door.

She ducked back into the elevator and hid behind Joseph.

Joseph’s brow furrowed. He saw the man too.

The elevator doors closed and took them down to the basement.

“Looks like you can’t go home either.”

Grace nodded.

They went to a nearby hotel together.

Joseph walked up to the front desk and handed over his ID.

“I’ll need both of your IDs,” the receptionist said, glancing at Grace

Grace looked at Joseph. Joseph said, “She’s not staying.”

The receptionist understood immediately.

Yeah, sure. People hiding affairs always said that. If they got caught using one ID for two people, the hotel would be in big trouble.

Grace’s face went red. She kept her head down.

Joseph looked down at her and booked the presidential suite.

Daisy and Anthony walked in just in time to recognize them. Daisy yanked Anthony behind a pillar, whipped out her phone, and started filming.

“Seriously?” Daisy giggled. “Borrows my place to make his move, and now he’s getting a room. Young people sure don’t beat around the bush anymore, do they?”
