He watched every small change in her expression as he spoke.
Edgar was her paternal uncle.

After Claudia’s parents passed away, Edgar and his wife, Imogen Bowman, became her legal guardians
Shortly after her grandfather, Graham Bowman, died, Edgar had rushed to arrange her marriage to Darrell–the boy she’d had a secret crush on for two years.
The whole arrangement had been settled in barely a month.
Claudia could barely believe what she was hearing.
She asked, “How am I supposed to trust you aren’t working for Edgar?”

Harold’s expression remained calm. “Edgar can’t afford a Rolls–Royce Cullinan.”
Claudia fell silent.

He read the unease in her eyes plainly. “If you’re scared, take the night to think it over. I’ll come pick you up first thing tomorrow morning.”
Claudia said nothing.
Harold reached for her phone sitting on the table.
“Hey!” Claudia lunged to snatch it back, only to crash straight into his rock–solid chest.
So firm.
Harold paused what he was doing and fixed her with a slow, steady gaze.
His eyes held warmth yet an unyielding firmness all the same, and she instinctively stepped back.
She could feel his sheer physical strength. One careless grip from him would easily leave her badly hurt.
Harold saved his phone number in her phone, then set the phone back down on the table.
He said, “Call me once you’ve made up your mind. I can come get you anytime, but don’t make me wait too long.”
With that, he turned and left without another word.
Claudia stood rooted to the spot, watching him open the car door and climb inside.
Right before pulling away, Harold glanced over at her one last time.
Somehow, she caught a faint trace of softness hidden in his eyes./
Who exactly is Harold?
Claudia stayed awake the entire night.
Her wedding was only a few days away.
She curled up tight under the covers, her body trembling uncontrollably as she lay in bed, completely lost on what she should do next.
None of this was a mere coincidence. Someone was secretly looking out for her–exposing Darrell’s affair and revealing that she’d been made the legal owner of the shady bar.
Both Darrell and Edgar were nothing but dangerous traps, waiting to drag her down.
Yet she still couldn’t figure out who Harold was.

She also couldn’t understand why he’d go out of his way to help her.

Claudia picked up her phone and stared blankly at Harold’s number in her contacts list.
She’d never met him before, yet there was an odd sense of familiarity lingering in her heart.
She locked her screen and forced her eyes shut, but his face kept replaying in her mind over and over
At five in the morning, she turned on the living room light and sat down on the sofa to drink a glass of ide
water.
Claudia walked out into the yard and found the sky already streaked with faint dawn light.
She lit wax candles before Graham’s portrait and bowed her head in prayer.
“Grandpa, please help me,” she murmured.
Claudia flipped a coin over in her palm, then closed her eyes to make a silent wish.
If it lands tails, I will leave with Harold.
The coin spun sharply through the air.
Before she could reach out to catch it, the rumble of a car engine came from just outside the gate.
By the time she snapped out of her daze, the coin was gone without a trace.
Claudia glanced at the wall clock; it was only six o’clock.
She stepped out of the yard.
A beam of sunlight filtered through the fence, stretching her shadow long across the lawn.
“Claudia, I’m here to take you home,” Imogen said with a bright smile.
Panic flared up inside Claudia. Imogen never woke up before nine on ordinary days, and she couldn’t fathom why she was up so early now.
She spotted two bodyguards, stepping out of the car behind Imogen, and forced herself to stay calm.
“Where are you taking me?” she asked.
Imogen came forward and took her hand, trying to lead her toward the car.
She said, “Your wedding’s just a few days away. We have to head back and get everything ready. You’ve been engaged long enough already.”
Claudia had no desire to go with her. Still, she knew the bodyguards would force her away if she resisted, and escape was impossible either way. She decided it was better to cooperate quietly and avoid more
trouble.

She instantly regretted not leaving with Harold the afternoon before.
Claudia said, “I need to go pack my luggage first…”

“No need,” Imogen cut in. “Everything brand new is already waiting for you at home. Darrell’s ‘taken care of every little detail.”

At eight o’clock in the morning, Harold stood in the empty yard with a dark, heavy look.
Have I scared the girl off that badly?
Has she run away in the middle of the night?
He pulled out his phone to make a call, and his gaze fell on a shiny coin lying on the ground.
The coin faced tails up, its surface glinting harshly under the sun’s bright reflection.
A coin? She was flipping a coin to decide her own fate?
Harold let out a low scoff, bent down to pick it up, then glanced at the burnt–out wax candles before Graham’s portrait.
He finished his phone call, put it away, and slipped the coin into his pocket.
Harold lit a new stick of wax candle and bowed respectfully to Graham’s portrait.
He got back into his car just as his assistant, Howard Coleman, called.
Howard said, “Mr. Cross, Ms. Bowman returned to Bowman Villa at six this morning. She appeared to go back of her own free will.”
Harold fell silent for a moment, then ended the call. He tapped his rough fingers slowly against the steering wheel, his brows furrowed tight.
Of her own free will?
Back at Bowman Villa, Claudia’s cousin, Jaden Bowman, lounged on the sofa with his legs crossed, glued to his mobile game.
“Use your ultimate already! Save it for what?” He let out a frustrated groan. “Ugh, lost another star.”
He tossed his phone down hard onto the soft couch, the cushion sinking slightly under the impact.
Jaden looked up and saw Claudia walk in, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “Well, look who’s back.”
Claudia ignored him completely and turned to Imogen. “I got up way too early today. I’d like to go catch up on some sleep.”

“Of course, go rest,” Imogen said, patting the back of her hand gently.
Claudia forced a smile and headed upstairs.

She had a private guest room on the third floor, set up just like a standard hotel room with every amenity she could need.
Claudia stepped inside, closed the door, and twisted the lock shut.
She pulled out her phone, only to find there was no cell service at all.
A chill ran down her spine as the realization sank in. She tried calling Harold, but the call wouldn’t go through, no matter how many times she tried.
It was clear the Bowman family intended to lock her inside and keep her trapped here.
She glanced out the window. Jumping down from this height would leave her severely injured, if not dead.
Yet she’d just noticed the maid and Jaden both had full internet connection on their phones.
She lay down on the bed and stared blankly up at the ceiling.

Harvey had long been bound by an arranged marriage. It was only right that he moved out soon, so he could find a chance to meet his intended bride.
Harold was also close to getting married, and staying on at the family home would only be awkward for
him, too.
Harvey had no issue with leaving. He was always out early and back late, and business trips kept him away often as well.
Harold hated the idea and wanted to stay put, but Damian wouldn’t allow it.
He’d spent decades raising them to adulthood, and he had no intention of letting them intrude on Kis quiet life with Isabelle.
With no other choice left, Harold moved into the staff quarters at his workplace.
That summer, Harvey left the country for a business trip. Around the same time, Harold got a strange text from an unknown number.
It led him to cross paths again with Claudia Bowman–the little girl who’d pulled him and Harvey out of mortal danger during the earthquake all those years ago.
“Leave with him at three this afternoon.”
Claudia had been relaxing in a rocking chair when she found out about Darrell Brady’s affair.
An unfamiliar number had sent her explicit photos and videos, along with that short, cryptic line of text.
A sharp ache twisted in her chest, and her fingers trembled uncontrollably.
Her phone screen went dark, but the faint sound felt harsh and grating to her ears.
A household maid glanced over at her with concern. “Ms. Bowman, are you alright?”
Claudia swallowed hard and picked up her coffee cup to take a small sip.
Her throat felt tight, and she couldn’t force a single word out.
When Claudia stayed unresponsive, the maid called out to her again. “Ms. Bowman?”
Claudia snapped back to her senses. “I’m fine.”
The maid still looked worried and studied her for a moment longer. Not wanting to overstep with more questions, she turned and went back to her work.

Claudia’s heart raced with a lingering sense of dread as she unlocked her phone again, staring at those seven plain words.
She couldn’t help wondering who the message was referring to.
Claudia checked the time–two forty, with twenty minutes left until three o’clock.
