“Harold, I only came over to check on Ms. Bowman,” Loretta said, putting on a hurt tone. “But it seems she doesn’t want me here at all.”
Harold’s gaze stayed fixed on Claudia as he gently pulled his hand free from Loretta’s grasp.
“If she doesn’t welcome you, there’s no need to stay,” Harold said flatly.
No one could tell if he was blaming Claudia or reproaching Loretta with those words.
“Howard, drive Ms. Flood home,” Harold ordered.
“Right away,” Howard replied.
He turned to Loretta politely. “Ms. Flood, let’s head out.”
“Harold, our marriage date’s already been set by both families,” Loretta protested. “It’s only three months away, and now you’re acting like this…”
“Howard.” Harold’s voice rose sharply with a warning edge.
Claudia flinched at his tone.
Loretta immediately fell silent, too.
In their six months of dating, Harold had never spoken to her so harshly before.
She could tell he was genuinely furious.
Howard shot Loretta a subtle hint to leave. She knew she couldn’t linger any longer.
She shot Claudia a cold glare, then walked out of the villa with Howard.
Only Claudia and Harold remained in the huge living room.
The room fell into an eerie, deathly silence.
Claudia’s heart raced nervously as Harold began walking toward her.
She shuffled her feet and stepped back timidly.
“Did she try to hit you?” Harold frowned.
Claudia was surprised he could tell what had happened.
Loretta had raised her hand to slap her, but missed and fell on her own instead.
Claudia wasn’t sure if that counted as an actual attempt to strike her.
She hesitated for two seconds, still searching for the right words, when Harold spoke again and left her

stunned. “You’ll always get taken advantage of if you stay quiet and never speak up for yourself.”
Claudia struggled to calm her racing thoughts.
“Okay,” she murmured simply.
Just one single word?
She really does not waste any extra words.
Harold let out a quiet sigh.
She couldn’t even bring herself to tell me what had happened.
Seeing her standing there frozen, too scared to move an inch, he turned and walked away.
Claudia finally breathed out a huge sigh of relief.

Inside the car, Howard reported, “Ms. Flood drove here on her own. She’s already left.”
“Revoke her villa access permissions,” Harold instructed.
Howard looked stunned. “What?”
With her access revoked, Loretta would never be able to enter the villa again.
This property had originally been bought as a gift for Loretta, left unused to gather dust and overgrown
weeds all this time.
Howard couldn’t help wondering what Harold was thinking.
Harold said, “Handle it tomorrow. Call off the engagement.”
Howard grew even more confused. “But earlier, you planned to settle Ms. Bowman’s matters first, then end the marriage with her and go ahead with your wedding to Ms. Flood as scheduled.”
“I won’t keep someone with a poor character,” Harold said plainly.
He stared at Claudia’s personal profile pulled up on his tablet.
She was twenty–two, enrolled in a combined bachelor’s and master’s program, a top science student who’d skipped grades multiple times without breaking a sweat.
It explained why she’d graduated so young.
Her file was incomplete with scattered details, yet he could piece together the general picture easily enough.
“Poor character?” Howard still couldn’t understand. It had clearly been Loretta who’d fallen to the floor just

“Claudia was holding a milk cup in her right hand,” Harold explained calmly. “Even if she’d pushed Loretta with her left, the milk would’ve spilled everywhere.”
He paused for a moment, a faint glint of amusement in his eyes. “She’s still recovering from a sprained ankle. There’s no way she could overpower someone taller than her.”
Harold smiled faintly and pulled up the villa surveillance footage on his phone.
Howard stared at him in shock. He’d never once seen the always stern, cold Harold smile so casually before.
It was truly a rare sight.
While stopped at a traffic light, Howard glanced over at the surveillance feed on Harold’s screen.
“Her reflexes are sharp, and she stayed perfectly steady on her feet,” Howard commented.
“She didn’t let herself get wronged at all,” Harold smiled quietly in agreement.
He minimized the video and watched Claudia through the live camera feed.
She was sitting on the sofa, drinking her milk and making a phone call.
“Mr. Cross, you’re smiling,” Howard pointed out in surprise.
Harold shot him a sharp side glance, and Howard quickly looked away.
Harold almost never smiled–especially not around women.
He’d barely spent any time with Loretta during their supposed courtship, never even holding her hand, let alone smiling at her.
“What do we do if the Flood family causes trouble over the broken engagement?” Howard asked with
concern.
Harold said, “We’re already legally married. Let them make a fuss if they want. Offer them a few business projects to settle things down easily enough.”
“What about your father?”
“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” Harold said softly. “Claudia’s different.”
“Different?” Howard couldn’t grasp his meaning right away.
Claudia was truly one of a kind.
Harold and Harvey’s lives were saved by her father–and by her as well.
