Claudia set her phone down gently, murmured a thanks, then picked up her spoon and began eating alongside him.
She ate in total silence, not saying a word, stealing glances at him every now and then.
Harold came off as rough around the edges, yet he carried himself with perfect gentlemanly grace while eating.
She couldn’t tell if it was just her imagination, but he felt oddly familiar somehow.
Claudia was the first to break the quiet.
She took a small sip of soup, then asked cautiously, “How did you sort out the legal representative paperwork?”
She’d wondered about this for an entire month, consumed with curiosity about this mysterious man.
Harold grabbed a napkin, dabbed it lightly against his lips, then rested both hands on the table.
Then he said, “I stole his household papers. I set fire to Edgar’s villa, messed up his company projects, and lined up a few run–down low–end developments for him elsewhere. I slipped the legal representative and share transfer contract in with the others while he signed in the chaos–and he signed it without a second
look.”
Claudia froze mid–bite, her fork hovering right at her lips, food still in her mouth.
How could he dare do all that?
From our meeting at the hospital to Edgar’s villa burning down was less than half an hour.
He pulled off this whole elaborate plan in just thirty minutes–what is his mind even made of?
She mumbled anxiously, “Did you cover everything cleanly? What if…”
Harold replied flatly, “There are no what–ifs.” His tone made it sound like the whole ordeal was barely worth mentioning.
Claudia nodded slowly.
She wanted to ask what he planned to do about Loretta, but hesitated, unsure if she should bring it up.
Back when I told him I didn’t care who I married, I never thought I’d end up developing any real feelings for my
husband.
Now here I am, married to a man who already has a fiancée–it’s incredibly awkward.
If he wants to pursue something with her, or if he needs me to step aside, I’d agree without hesitation.
This mess is almost over, and I don’t want to stand in their way if there really is something between them.

Besides, Harold has already done more than enough to help me.

Claudia said softly, “If there’s anything I can do to help you, just say the word. I’ll do whatever I’m able to.”
The second the words left her mouth, she instantly regretted them.
What could this man possibly need my help with? I must look ridiculous offering this.
Harold blinked in quiet surprise.
This girl never fails to catch me off guard.
His eyes darkened slightly as he said, “Just look after the fish in the pond. Don’t let any of them die.”
Claudia stared at him in shock.
So he likes fish?
“Alright,” she agreed without a moment’s thought.
Harold didn’t actually care for fish at all.
Henrietta had brought them over during the house renovation, claiming they brought good fortune.
He’d simply given her this small task to keep her occupied, so she wouldn’t dwell on unfair feelings.
The two fell back into silence.
After a while, Harold stepped outside to take a phone call.
Claudia walked over to the railing and watched the lotus flowers sway gently in the night breeze.
Far out in the middle of the lake, a young woman sat alone, playing the violin piece Windswept Rain.
Claudia tilted her head and hummed softly along to the melody, completely unaware that Harold had come to stand right behind her.
When the song ended, she pressed her lips together, pulled her shoulders close to her body, and lifted her gaze to stare up at the bright full moon hanging in the sky.
Her expression held layers of unspoken thoughts, impossible for anyone to read.
She savored this rare moment of peace. It felt like ages since she’d felt so calm and untroubled. Everything in her life had turned upside down ever since that first mysterious email arrived.
Behind her, Harold picked up his suit jacket from the chair, stepped forward, and draped it gently over her shoulders.
Claudia jumped in surprise and looked up at him.
A warm flutter rushed through her chest, and the tips of her ears slowly flushed pink.

Harold said simply, “Let’s head home.”
She paused for a heartbeat.
Home…
I actually have a real home now.
Harold turned and walked ahead, and Claudia hurried to follow close behind him.
Roger pulled the car up to the villa gate, but Harold stayed seated inside and didn’t get out.

Claudia didn’t ask any questions. She stepped out of the car, closed the door, and stood, watching as the vehicle drove away.
It was only after she collected her thoughts that she realized she still had his suit jacket draped over her shoulders.
She took it off, feeling its thick, firm fabric—just like the man himself, solid and unyielding.
