Joyce scrambled forward on her hands and knees until she reached his feet, looking utterly broken. Darrell let out a low scoff and looked down at her.
“Was it you who tampered with Claudia’s heels?”
She shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks. “No–it wasn’t me! I didn’t do it!” It only took her half second to realize–she’d been framed.
“Tsk.”
Darrell lowered himself to one knee in front of her, his expression teasing yet unmistakably dangerous. He gripped her chin–it was hard to tell whether the stain on it was wine or blood–and said, “You want to be Mrs. Brady that badly, is that it?”
Her jaw ached under his hold, the skin at the corner of her mouth rubbed raw. A metallic taste rose in her throat.
“Darrell… I know you like Claudia. I’ve never asked for more than just being by your side. I never actually thought I could become Mrs. Brady.” She forced the words through gritted teeth.
“If I had messed with her shoes, that still wouldn’t make you choose me. It wouldn’t be worth it, Darrell…”
Joyce clutched at his wrists, pleading silently for him to loosen his grip.
“Darrell…” Her voice broke. “You’re hurting me-”
But Darrell didn’t let go. Instead, his fingers tightened, his own jaw tensing.
Fresh tears carved silver lines through the dried wine on her face.
“Good. Glad we’re clear.” Darrell shoved her chin away roughly and released her.
Joyce sagged in relief, dragging her soiled dress behind her as she scuttled backward.
He picked up a sanitizing wipe from the nearby table and cleaned his hands.
“Go get cleaned up. Wait for me on the bed.”
She swallowed hard, her voice thick. “Darrell… I’m on my period.”
“Oh?” Darrell’s lips curled with dark amusement as he tossed the wipe aside. “Even better. Never tried that before.”
“Darrell…”
Her eyes reddened in disbelief. For a second, she thought she’d heard wrong.
But she hadn’t.

She’d spent two years by his side. She hadn’t expected love–but she’d thought that had to count for something, didn’t it?
She never imagined it would come to this.
This felt cheaper than being with a stranger for money.
“What? Not willing? Then leave. Nobody’s keeping you here.” He flashed her that dangerously charming smile of his.
Most of the Davidson family’s business successes were thanks to Darrell.
Two years ago, when the Davidsons‘ company was failing, Darrell was the one who turned things around And it was the Davidsons themselves who had pushed Joyce into Darrell’s bed in the first place.
Joyce did have feelings for Darrell–but she never liked how transactional their intimacy felt.
Outside of the business arrangement, she genuinely enjoyed being with him.
He was skilled in bed.
But he never let her stay the night. As soon as they were done, he’d tell her to leave–not a moment of tenderness, not even a shared cigarette.
And everyone knew Darrell was hung up on that girl from the fallen Bowman family. He’d go out of his way to catch glimpses of her, arranging “accidental” run–ins.
He’d even staged a fake stalker scare once, slowly drawing the quiet Claudia out of her shell until she began to develop feelings for him.
And Joyce had helped make it happen.
Joyce pulled herself up, a complete mess, and stumbled into the bathroom.
Inside, she crouched down, covered her face, and sobbed silently.
When she finally came out in a bathrobe, Darrell was already lying across the bed like a starfish, eyes closed, completely naked.
| Joyce glanced at him briefly.
Even after all this time, the sight still made her flush.
The curtains were open. The windows were one–way glass, so no one could see in from outside,
Darrell didn’t care, but Joyce wasn’t that bold.
She reached for the remote to close them.
“Leave them,” Darrell said calmly, eyes still shut.
