She was about to wrench his other arm when the kid from the passenger side swung a baseball bat at her.

“Thud.”

It landed hard against her shoulder. Stumbling back, she lost her footing and rolled down the grassy slope beside the road.

“Damn it,” she hissed through clenched teeth, pain shooting through her body.

Her knee smacked against a jagged rock, scraping it raw. The straps of her sandals snapped, leaving her barefoot.

The kid with the bat scrambled down after her, raising it for another swing.

“Sorry, lady!”

He brought it down–but Claudia was quicker. She swept her leg hard into the back of his knee.

The bat dropped. With a yelp, the kid tumbled the rest of the way down and splashed into the muddy drainage ditch about thirty feet below.

Claudia limped over, grabbed the bat, and hauled herself back up to the roadside.

The one on the ground was groaning, too hurt to move. The guy in the van had knocked himself out when she’d slammed the door on his head earlier.

Hands trembling, she reached into the van and grabbed her phone, then dialed 911.

After making the call, she didn’t have the energy to deal with the kid in the ditch. She managed to shove the other two back into the van.

Locking them inside, she slumped down by the roadside to wait for the cops.

Her whole body shook, teeth chattering uncontrollably.

It was a warm day, but she felt chilled straight to the bone.

She tried calling Harold, but after the 911 call, her phone screen kept flickering blue–no calls would go through.

It was just past noon when she got to the precinct. After giving her statement and going through the paperwork, it was already after two p.m.

A female officer brought her some water and let her clean up in the break room.

Wiping the grime off her face, she carefully removed her smudged contact lenses. Everything went blurry.

But it was fine–she could still make out shapes and faces well enough.

Seemed like these families had been here before–picking up their kids more than once.

Turned out the three were dropouts, no jobs, no money. Someone had talked them into trying a quick robbery. But Claudia had spent years doing kickboxing classes at the gym–her reflexes were sharp.

Even the cops at the station were quietly impressed.
