Chapter 732 The Hospital Visit
He opened the passenger door and gently lowered her into the seat.
Just how high up must he be to drive something like a Knight XV?
Claudia sat rigidly, afraid to shift even slightly and mess up the interior.
Harold braced one hand against the doorframe, leaned in, and fastened her seatbelt.

The rough fabric of his jacket brushed lightly against her chest–like a sudden, low current of electricity- leaving her stiff and tense.
His scent washed over her all at once.
It was warm, faintly woody, like cedar after rain.
Claudia’s heart hammered against her ribs. Her breathing turned shallow.
He shut her door, circled the car, and slid into the driver’s seat. After placing his cap in the console, he started the engine and pulled away from the station.
“Sorry to drag you out again,” Claudia said, her voice apologetic.
“Anywhere else hurt?” He glanced over.
“My shoulder.”
Probably from when the kid had swung that stick and sent her tumbling down the slope.
“Let’s get you checked at the hospital first,” Harold said.
“Okay.”
On the way, he pulled over at a convenience store, bought a pair of flip–flops, and slipped them onto her feet himself before continuing toward the medical center.
Once parked, they stepped out.
“Can you walk?”
“Yeah.” She didn’t dare ask him to carry her again.
A guy nearly six–four in full uniform carrying a woman into a hospital–she’d never live it down.
Harold didn’t press it. Instead, he shrugged off his uniform jacket, revealing a light olive–green shirt underneath. The fabric clung subtly to the defined lines of his chest.
Claudia allowed herself only a flicker of a glance before looking away, her cheeks warming.
Harold caught that quick shift in her gaze.

Is she really that uneasy around me?

They were legally married now–her name was in his household file. Was she having second thoughts?
Truth was, Claudia just didn’t want to stare. It felt too forward, too telling.
What woman didn’t appreciate a well–built physique?
Back when Darrell had asked, she’d claimed she wasn’t into overly muscular guys–but that was only because Darrell was lean, and she didn’t want to hurt his feelings.
Darrell was fit, sure.
But if Harold took his shirt off? That was in a whole other league.
The difference between standard and premium.
Claudia limped forward. Harold kept pace beside her, brow slightly furrowed.
He considered grabbing a wheelchair, but it seemed excessive.
Still, watching her hobble made him feel like a jerk.
He reached out and caught her arm gently. She halted.
It was August, and the heat was thick enough to taste.
Sweat beaded at her temples. Her clean, makeupfree skin had a soft pink glow–like fresh rose petal flesh, dewy and fresh.
Harold wasn’t faring much better. His back was damp, the fabric of his shirt darkened with sweat.
“I’m going to carry you,” he stated.
But he didn’t just sweep her up. He waited, watching her face.
She released a quiet breath, then nodded.
Harold took her wrist, guided her arm around his shoulder, and lifted her effortlessly against his chest.
Claudia rested her hand lightly on his shoulder, holding herself still.
His body radiated heat, enough to make her skin prickle with awareness.
Beneath her palm, she could feel the steady, strong drum of his heartbeat.
“Sorry for messing up your day,” she murmured near his ear. “You can just drop me off. I’ll manage. Go back to work.”
“Claudia,” he said quietly, “you don’t have to be nervous around me.”

“I’m not nervous.”
The elevator arrived, empty except for them.
He stepped inside. “You’re not?”
A faint smile touched his lips as he leaned slightly into her space.
“Hey-” She flinched, her hand coming up instinctively to cover his mouth. Her palm was soft, warm against his lips.
