Chapter 751 The Coin Came Up Tails
Harold took a moment, carefully weighing how to respond to her question.

He couldn’t exactly say, “You saved my life, so I’m spending the rest of it with you to pay you back.”
That would only bring up memories she’d rather leave buried.
Her grandfather had passed not long ago, her parents were out of the picture, and her brother’s body was never recovered after the earthquake. She’d even lost her memory for a while afterward–everything before the quake was gone, including any recollection of Harvey or Harold himself.
Some things were better left untouched.
And as for how the Bowmans had treated her… she didn’t have family left anymore. All she had now was
him.
“The coin came up tails, Claudia. Did you get what you wanted?” Harold asked.
Tails?
She never actually saw the result that day–Imogen had pulled her away before she could check.
But Harold had come looking for her that night….
He really showed up.
So running into him outside Bowman Villa wasn’t some random coincidence. He’d been there for her.
The man was too good at reading between the lines. He’d picked up on her hesitation from just a coin toss.
Maybe Graham was right after all. Maybe the answer written for her really was Harold.
Claudia wanted to hear him say it. “That night at Bowman Villa… you were looking for me?”
“Yeah,” Harold said, his brow faintly creased. “Did you see me?”
He’d wrapped up his business late that night and went straight to the address Howard had given him— Bowman Villa.
“Mm–hmm…” She’d woken up from that awkward dream about him and saw him standing outside. Her voice dropped slightly. “Then why didn’t you just come up to the door?”
If he’d walked right up to the house that night, Claudia would’ve followed him without a second thought.
“Didn’t want you to think I was some stalker,” Harold said, glancing over at her.
She’d already been wary of him when they first met. If he’d just shown up at her door in the middle of the night, who knows if she would’ve trusted him enough to leave? Causing more misunderstanding was the last thing he wanted.

It wouldn’t have been hard to just barge in and take her with him–but that wasn’t how he operated.
Claudia gave a slow nod.
What he said made sense.
When they reached the penthouse, Harold set her down on the sofa and stood in front of her, looking down.
Claudia suddenly felt awkward about their positions. She couldn’t tell if he was doing it on purpose or Just standing there without thinking.
If she looked up, her eyes landed right at the level of his belt.
He was close–really close–standing right in front of her.
Claudia suddenly didn’t know where to rest her gaze.
Harold’s voice came out low and rough. “Don’t worry about Loretta. I’ll deal with her. If you ever run into her, keep your distance.”
“Okay,” Claudia murmured, nodding.
She wasn’t sure why he’d brought Loretta up just then. Did it mean he wasn’t planning to call off the engagement?
Only in the last couple of days had Harold realized how dead–set Loretta’s family was against breaking things off. Even offering them the most lucrative deal on the table wouldn’t change their minds.
And Loretta herself hadn’t fully grasped how influential the Cross family was until after the engagement was set. Marrying into that family–any man from the Cross family–was hitting the jackpot in her eyes.
She wasn’t about to let that slip away.
If the engagement fell through, in her world, she’d be seen as damaged goods–passed over for someone
new.
She wasn’t stupid enough to let that happen.
Besides, Loretta had just been a random pick from a stack of dating profiles Harold’s team had put together.
He hadn’t expected the Flood family to react so aggressively when he returned to Cross Manor and made his position clear. They moved fast.
That afternoon, after Lowell called to say Claudia had been hit by a car, Damian and Louis were already on it, handling the fallout.
Harold went over a few more things for her to keep in mind, then headed to the guest bathroom to shower.

Claudia stayed on the sofa, feeling restless.

She was thinking about how she was going to shower that night—and what she could even wear.
Her right arm was in a splint, immobile. She couldn’t fasten a bra or pull a shirt over the brace.
It was a real problem.
She didn’t dare call Katrina–she’d never hear the end of it. So she dialed Chelsea instead.
