Chapter 752 The Gift Box

Harold ran a hand through his damp hair, shaking off the water. He’d overheard her earlier making plans to go shopping with some guy.
His brow furrowed.
Was she already seeing someone new?
He walked into the kitchen, pulled a bottle of cold water from the fridge, tilted his head back, and took a long drink.
From the living room, Claudia watched him through the slats of the rocking chair before her eyes grew heavy and she drifted off.
Harold noticed, grabbed a light throw blanket, and carefully draped it over her.
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Harold answered it.
Chelsea stood on the other side, holding a gift box in one hand and a shopping bag in the other.
When she saw how tall and solidly built Harold was, she was so startled she fumbled the gift box–it fell to the floor, spilling its contents right at his feet.
Black, red, lace…
An assortment of lingerie lay scattered between them.
“Qh–Harold?” Chelsea paled, frozen in place, completely forgetting about the clothes on the ground.
Chelsea was the daughter of Abigail and Jonathan.
Her eyes widened as everything clicked–Claudia’s mystery guy was Harold?
Harold glanced down at the delicate fabrics, an unexpected heat rising in his chest.
He met Chelsea’s stunned gaze, then bent down, hooked a finger under the silky pieces, dropped them back into the box, and closed the lid.
Straightening up slowly, his eyes shifted to the shopping bag still clutched in Chelsea’s hand.
“Explain,” he said flatly. He had a pretty good idea what this was about, but he wanted to hear her say it.
Chelsea forced an awkward smile. “S–sorry, Harold. I was just dropping off some things for Claudia…”
“Give it here.”
Harold held out his hand. Nervously, Chelsea passed him the bag.

She glanced at the gift box now tucked under his arm and swallowed hard. This wasn’t going how she’d planned–not at all.
She was totally busted.
Claudia had talked about this guy for weeks but never mentioned his name, probably to keep things simple in case it didn’t work out. All Chelsea knew was he was some rugged, outdoorsy type.
She’d figured a tough guy might still have a soft spot, and that every man appreciated a little romance… so she’d put together what she thought was a helpful “care package“.
Never in a million years did she expect it to be Harold.
This was bad. Everyone in their circle knew how intense and no–nonsense Harold could be.
If Claudia ended up with him, would she even have a say in anything?
And with his build… if Claudia actually wore any of that lingerie…
Chelsea gulped. She wanted to ask for the box back, but she didn’t dare.
Harold watched her staring at the box. He rubbed his thumb over the lid. He wasn’t giving it back.
“Anything else?”
“Harold… Claudia didn’t have it easy growing up. Just… go easy on her, okay?” Chelsea managed, mustering all/her courage.
She was genuinely worried he might snap at her right there.
Harold’s frown deepened. She shows up with a box of provocative lingerie and then tells him to be nice? The irony wasn’t lost on him. What exactly was she trying to accomplish here?
And wasn’t this advice a little late?
Besides, he was too busy making sure Claudia had everything she wanted to ever be rough with her.
“We done?”
“Y–yeah. That’s all.” Chelsea didn’t push her luck.
Suddenly, she felt a real pang of worry for Claudia.
Harold had always been the quiet, serious type in the family. They barely saw him once a year anymore. She remembered him from years back–always getting into scraps with the troublemakers in the neighborhood. And after he joined the service, he pretty much vanished.
It never crossed her mind that Harold would be the one staying here.
He was the kind of guy parents warned their kids about–intimidating just by reputation.

“If you get hungry, head down to the lobby, give my name, and order whatever you want,” Harold said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
“Huh?” Chelsea blinked, confused for a second, then it hit her.
Harold was buying her silence.
“Thanks, Harold!”
Harold closed the door.
He stood in the entryway for a long moment, just looking down at the pastel gift box.
Say what you will, but Chelsea’s gift is… surprisingly on point.
Exactly his style.

Those flimsy pieces of fabric were basically nothing–one good tug and they’d be gone. Was there even a difference between wearing them and wearing nothing at all?
His expression darkened slightly. He gripped the box a little tighter, feeling an unfamiliar warmth spread to his ears.
He swallowed, then turned and carried everything to Claudia’s room, leaving it on the foot of her bed.
That afternoon, Claudia stirred awake to the sound of soft rustling.
She thought it might be Harold, but it was Megan tidying up nearby.
“Did I wake you, Mrs. Cross?” Megan asked gently.
