“Hey, Ms. Bowman–why don’t you join us for a drink?” one of the men said with a slanted grin, stepping forward to take her hand.

Claudia pulled back sharply. Her eyes darted to an old broom leaning against the wall. In one quick motion, she stomped on the bristles, twisted the handle free, and held it like a staff.

She thrust the wooden end firmly against the chest of the man advancing toward her.

“Back off,” Claudia warned, retreating another step. Her voice was steady, and her face showed no trace of

fear.

The man smirked, glancing down at the broomstick pressed against his broad chest. This one’s got spirit he thought.

“I think she might know how to fight,” Loretta cut in, sounding uneasy.

She’d suspected as much last time, when she hadn’t been able to lay a hand on Claudia.

“Feisty. I like that,” the man replied, his grin turning sleazy. He reached for the stick, intending to yank her closer.

But Claudia was quicker. She snapped the stick back, then swung it hard across the side of his neck.

“Ow–damn it!” He yelped in pain, stumbling backward.

Loretta rushed to steady him, shooting Claudia a venomous glare.

“What’re you waiting for? Get her!” she snapped at the other man beside her.

She wasn’t leaving today without making Claudia pay.

Claudia stood her ground. The second man lunged; she sidestepped smoothly, then drove her elbow deep into his armpit.

He crumpled to the ground instantly, looking even worse off than Loretta’s brother.

Claudia didn’t hesitate. Her black heel came down hard on the man’s outstretched hand. A gut–wrenching scream echoed through the courtyard.

Loretta stared, stunned. Had Claudia been training in some secret fight club?

Two guys couldn’t even handle her?

Calmly, Claudia tapped the broomstick against the head of the man groaning on the ground.

“Claudia! Let my brother go!” Loretta shouted, furious but too scared to step any closer.

Ignoring her, Claudia pulled out her phone and made a call.

“Ms. Bowman… please… get your foot off…” the man on the ground gasped, barely able to breathe

The pain in his armpit had locked his muscles, and the throbbing in his hand kept him frozen.

“Claudia! Do you even know what happens when you assault someone inside Southhall Compound?!” Loretta bluffed, trying to sound confident though she wasn’t.

“You started it,” Claudia replied flatly, her eyes flicking upward toward the security camera mounted overhead.

A cold shiver ran down Loretta’s spine. Fear began to curl in her stomach.

“If Harold ever finds out what you’re really like, he’ll replace you–just like he did with me. It’s only a matter of time!”

Claudia’s heart tightened.

Harold had just smoothed things over between them–probably not easily–and now she’d gone and put two men on the ground. Would he be angry?

She wasn’t sure.

A flicker of uncertainty passed over her composed expression.

Just as she was weighing the situation, Nora and two uniformed security guards hurried into the courtyard.

Loretta was taken aback. She’d thought Claudia’s call was a bluff, but she really did have security on her side.

Since when could Claudia order around Southhall security?

Even the Flood family had to tread carefully and ask politely here. How dare Claudia act so entitled!

“You all right?” Nora asked, looking Claudia over.

Claudia shook her head, though her hands were trembling slightly. Even the stick in her grip shook.

Inside, she was scared.

“Post a notice,” Claudia said, forcing her voice level. “The Floods are barred from entering.”

“Got it.” Nora nodded.

“Claudia! Who do you think you are? You can’t treat me this way!” Loretta stepped forward.

Claudia pressed her heel down harder.

“Agh-!” The man beneath her cried out in renewed agony.
