People cultivated their own brand of refined living: wine tastings, vintage record collecting, weekend gardening, or losing oneself in a good book within a quiet library.
Each was a pursuit of the finer life, woven with touches of nature, art, culture, and personal passion.
Southhall Compound’s third wing housed a private art studio, a traditional paneled study lined with leather–bound volumes, and even a music room fitted with a grand piano–everything Stella had ever dreamed of finding.
“I heard you’re into calligraphy as well, Mrs. Campbell,” Claudia mentioned. She’d done her research ahead
of time.
“Actually, yes. I saw you earlier today at Jaron’s studio–though I doubt you noticed me. I was hoping to find some pieces by Ludi, but she’s been almost impossible to get in touch with this year. I ended up swallowing my pride and asking Jaron if he had anything. You’re close with him?”
“We go way back. He went to college with my grandfather.”
“That explains it,” Stella said, nodding slowly.
Claudia added casually, “For your gathering, I could probably ask Ludi to do a live inscription.”
“Really? That would be amazing… But are you sure she’d agree?” Stella looked genuinely surprised.
Timothy had spent weeks trying to get Ludi on board, and she’d only agreed because it was for Acadia University. Now this young woman–barely in her twenties and not exactly a public figure–was claiming she could make it happen? It sounded a little too good to be true.
Even getting an appointment with Ludi seemed unlikely, let alone a live performance.
Claudia just smiled, went over a few more details with Stella, and they exchanged contacts.
“We’ll draw up a full event plan based on your needs in the next few days and send it over,” Claudia told her.
Stella had already been inclined to book the venue, but with Claudia’s mention of Ludi doing an inscription, she agreed without a second thought.
Still, after Claudia left, Stella wasn’t entirely convinced. She decided to call Darren just to be sure.
When Darren told her that Claudia’s word was as good as his own, Stella was taken aback–and got the distinct feeling Darren might be seeing someone.
She’d been meaning to introduce her daughter to him, but that clearly wasn’t going to happen now.
During their talk, Claudia had finished half a glass of red wine.
After seeing Stella out, she felt her words drifting a little, and her whole body grew soft and heavy, as if she could fall asleep the moment she hit a couch.

She wasn’t dizzy or unsteady on her feet, but warmth spread through her, and even her breath felt hot.
“Ms. Bowman,” Nora said, glancing over at her.
“Do I look drunk?” Claudia asked, completely serious.
“Not really,” Nora replied evenly. She could tell it was a genuine question.
Her boss clearly wasn’t much of a drinker.
“Good,” Claudia murmured under her breath.
The product launch was winding down, and the final segment of the evening began–the charity auction
All proceeds that night were going to a local arts education fund.
Up for bidding were an original oil painting by a well–known regional artist, a framed vintage jazz concer poster, and a one–of–a–kind diamond bracelet from a respected jewelry designer.
The painting went first and sold quickly.
Next came the concert poster.
Watching from a private room upstairs, Claudia thought the piece looked familiar–but something about it felt off.
The opening bid was set at just ten thousand dollars.
But before long, it had climbed past three hundred thousand.
She noticed Harold raising his paddle.
This wasn’t a high–stakes auction house event–just a modest charity segment tucked into the evening- but plenty of people were joining in.
“Eight hundred thousand,” someone called out.
Harold kept bidding.
He seemed unfazed by the numbers, not even blinking when he raised his paddle again.
Claudia picked up her phone and sent him a quick text, “Don’t bid.”
Harold glanced at his screen, then promptly turned it face down and scanned the room.
Claudia stepped back from the window, hoping he wouldn’t spot her.
Weird, she thought. Why did she feel like hiding?
She placed a hand over her chest, her heart beating a little faster.

When she peeked out again, Harold was no longer in the main event space.
Taking a quiet breath, she headed downstairs toward Malus House.
