Claudia took a seat. Harold’s eyes drifted to her collarbone–he hadn’t been able to hold back last night.
To be honest, Claudia should’ve recognized what those marks were, but she didn’t seem to notice.
Harold ate slowly. She had reacted a little last night, but she’d been too drunk to really push him away.
It hadn’t felt right taking advantage, so he’d just lain down beside her and stored there through the night.
Still, it was progress.
Claudia studied him, turning things over in her head.
Last night Harold mentioned they’d go wedding dress shopping today, then set a date for their engagement photos. They’d even shared a bed. Did that mean they’d be sleeping together from now on?
She still couldn’t figure out why Harold was helping her.
To her, he was practically a stranger–his sudden appearance left her unsettled, with too many mixed
emotions.
And yet, Harold seemed to know her better than she expected.
“Timing might be tight,” Harold said, forwarding her the engagement shoot schedule.
Back when he and Loretta were getting married, she’d handled all the wedding outfits herself. But this time, he wanted to choose everything with Claudia.
“Whatever you think is fine,” Claudia replied. Predictably, she didn’t have strong opinions when it came to him.
Harold shook his head. “Don’t just say ‘whatever‘. If that’s your answer, we’ll end up shooting every single option. Getting married is a once–in–a–lifetime thing. I want you to pick what you actually like—whether it’s the person or the dress.”
Claudia felt a small flutter at his sudden firmness.
She was already nervous by the time they pulled up to the bridal boutique.
Harold was behind the wheel, but his mood had clearly dipped.
Right before they got in the car, Roger had called.
He’d told Harold about running into Harvey the night before, and Harold had been quiet ever since.
Claudia didn’t feel comfortable asking why. He just seemed weighed down.
When they arrived, Harold asked Claudia to wait in the car for a minute. He stepped out to make a call.

She didn’t know what it was about, but she did as she was told.
Harold called Harvey.
Harvey asked, “What’s up?”
Harold paused. “Claudy and I are at the bridal shop.”

Harvey said,” Alright. Go ahead and pick something out. I’ll have my assistant transfer the money.”
“Harvey, you know what I mean. Claudy once said she’d be fine with anyone… as long as it wasn’t Darrell
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds. “Look, if she’s not right for you, or if there’s someone else you want, tell me now and I’ll come over. But if not… don’t hurt her.”
Harold said, “Harvey, she was supposed to be yours.”
Harvey corrected, “She was never mine. That was just talk, nothing official. Go home and open the box I gave you.”
Harold frowned, his thoughts tangled. He’d never opened that box Harvey had given him.
Ever since they were kids, Harvey had always looked out for him–always putting Harold first. Harold didn’t want him sacrificing anything now.
Harvey hung up. He stared at the pile of résumés scattered across his desk, restless. Flipping through them absently, his eyes caught one name: Dolores.
He pulled her résumé from the stack with his long fingers, glanced it over twice, and said to his assistant beside him, “Go with her.”
The assistant was surprised. “Excuse me?”
Plenty of candidates had impressive degrees or solid experience. Dolores was just a recent graduate—aside from being pretty, nothing really stood out.
Harvey didn’t explain. He just pressed his fingers to his temple and waved her off.
The assistant didn’t argue. She’d been at Cypher Group long enough to know Harvey didn’t hire based on looks.
She’d spent weeks organizing this recruitment drive, and in two seconds, without a second glance, he’d picked Dolores.
Some people just got lucky.
She gathered the remaining résumés and left the office.
If Amber from the secretarial department hadn’t quit after getting pregnant, this spot would’ve never opened up.
