Once he had drawn her into the room, her heart immediately began to race.

Claudia took a seat on the edge of his bed, surrounded by the distinct, familiar scent that lingered in Harold’s space.
He retrieved the hair dryer from the bathroom and began drying her hair, his movements surprisingly gentle.
He knew what he was doing–he’d picked it up from watching Damian.
Damian often dried Isabelle’s hair and had once told Harold to pay attention, that it mattered.
Harold used to think Isabelle had married a decent guy, even though she was always giving him a hard time.
And he used to chuckle at Damian, thinking he was whipped–a grown man bending over backwards just to blow–dry his wife’s hair.
Now, he didn’t see it that way at all. In fact, he respected Damian for it. And here he was, following in his footsteps, doing the same for Claudia.
As Harold worked through her damp strands, Claudia grew flustered.
No one had ever done something like this for her. She lifted her gaze to study him.
Harold’s eyes shifted from her long hair to her face. “What’s wrong?”
Claudia shook her head slightly.
A faint smile touched his lips.
It didn’t take long for her hair to be about halfway dry.
Harold set the dryer aside and ran his fingers gently through her locks, then let his hand come to rest against her cheek.
The tips of her ears were flushed pink.
Harold watched her for a brief moment before turning and walking toward the door.
Thinking he was leaving, Claudia rose to follow him.
But he only paused at the doorway, reached out, and quietly closed the door.
Her heart seemed to stop along with her steps. She’d known this moment would come someday–she just hadn’t expected it to be tonight.
Harold still had his back to her. After a second’s hesitation, he reached over and switched off the light.

Then he turned slowly, crossed the room, and lifted her into his arms.

Claudia’s heart leapt into her throat. She wrapped her arms around his neck, studying his face in the faint moonlight filtering through the window.
The sharp angles of his features seemed even more pronounced in the shadows.
His body temperature climbed quickly, noticeably.
He laid her down carefully onto the bed. Trying to steady her nerves, Claudia let her partly–dried hair fan out across his pillow.
Harold didn’t speak. He simply leaned in and captured her lips with his. Their breaths tangled almost instantly.
Claudia could tell he’d done this before–he kissed with a certainty that left her dizzy, completely overtaking her senses.
Then she felt a cool draft against her chest–her buttons had been deftly undone.
The front clasp of her bra came loose next.
She felt like a fish sinking into deep ocean waters, her air slowly being drawn away until she could barely catch her breath.
He kissed her deeply, insistently, his mouth trailing down to her neck. Claudia kept her hands at her sides, almost afraid to move. Her soft sighs gradually melted into quiet whimpers.
“Harold…” she managed, eyelids fluttering open slightly.
“Yeah?”
He stilled. A flicker of disappointment passed through his eyes–he thought she was going to tell him to
stop.
“I’m… I’m a little scared,” she whispered, swallowing hard.
“They’ll pass soon,” he murmured, brushing his thumb over her cheek.
But that wasn’t really what scared her.
Harold took her hand and guided it to the buttons of his pajama shirt, silently urging her to undo them.
Claudia’s thoughts were scattering in every direction.
Before she could gather herself, Harold simply took matters into his own hands and shed his own clothes.
“Mommy!”
From the living room came the sound of Zander crying, loud and distressed.

Waking to find Claudia gone, he had panicked. He’d dragged his large white stuffed goose from the bedroom into the living area, but when he still couldn’t find her, the tears had started in earnest.
“Daddy…!”
His cries grew even more frantic.
The living room was empty–just a table still set with the remains of their cooled–down dinner.
Harold let out a low, rough sigh and swallowed hard. He drew the blanket up over Claudia, then quickly straightened his own clothes.
Bending down, he pressed a kiss to her cheek. “I’ll go see what’s wrong.

Claudia pulled the blanket tighter around herself, curling up slightly. From the corner of her eye, she couldn’t miss the obvious evidence of his arousal.
Harold slipped out of the room.
“Hey, buddy.” His voice came out huskier than usual.
Recognizing that familiar tone, Zander’s cries quieted almost immediately.
Harold bent and scooped him up. “What’s all this crying about, huh?”
Zander sniffled, small arms clinging tightly to Harold’s neck.
“Want Mommy. Where’s Mommy?”
“Mommy’s tired. She’s resting in the other room,” Harold said, frowning slightly–unable to fully hide his irritation at the interruption.
Claudia lay wrapped in Harold’s blanket for what felt like a long time, waiting for her heartbeat to settle.
Eventually, she slipped into the bathroom to freshen up, straightened her clothes, and smoothed the tousled bedsheets. Then she quietly left the room.
