Claudia couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching her from behind. She didn’t dare furn around to look.
Her thoughts kept drifting back to what happened in Harold’s room.
The rough calluses on his hands had brushed over every part of her skin. He’d taken charge completely yet there was something almost clumsy about the way he moved, like he was out of practice.
Then there was Zander. She guessed he probably never knew his mother, or she’d left when he was just a baby.
Otherwise, Claudia wouldn’t have been able to step into that motherly role so easily.
Zander was three. Harold was twenty–eight. Which meant he’d been with Zander’s mom before he turned twenty–four.
After all this time, maybe he’d just forgotten how to be with someone like that.
Was that why he seemed so awkward?
Claudia didn’t understand why, but those images just wouldn’t leave her mind.
She remembered clearly the look on Harold’s face when Zander showed up at the door.
He’d looked ready to kill.
She could already picture it—in a few days when they went for their wedding photo shoot, Harold would find some excuse to send Zander over to Cross Manor.
“Time to eat.”
Harold finished warming up the food and walked over.

He picked Zander up with one arm and held his other hand out to Claudia.
She placed her hand in his. It was warm, the hardened skin of his palm slightly rough against hers.
Zander started eating on his own at first, but halfway through, Harold began feeding him.
They didn’t talk much.
That night, Claudia put Zander to bed.
Ever since meeting her, Zander insisted she sleep beside him every night.
That left Harold on the other side of the bed.
Like usual, once Zander was sound asleep, Harold carefully moved him over and pulled Claudia into the middle.

Chapter 792 Nightmare
But after what happened that afternoon, Zander had a nightmare in the middle of the night.
“Miss, Zander doesn’t wanna ride the horse…”
He whimpered, half–awake and trembling.

Claudia woke to find herself tucked between them. Without overthinking, she sat up and tried to soothe him.
But he kept crying, lost somewhere back in that frightening afternoon.
Harold’s frown deepened.
Zander didn’t reach for his father–he just curled tighter into Claudia’s arms.
“Mommy’s right here, sweetie. It’s okay, Mommy’s here…” Claudia whispered, gently rubbing his back.
It took a long time for Zander to settle, squirming and sniffling before finally drifting back to sleep.
Claudia lay on her side. Harold was right behind her. She stayed still, afraid any movement might wake Zander and force another half hour of comforting.
Harold watched her quietly, then reached over and brushed the hair from her face, tucking it behind her
ear.

“Sorry about all this,” he whispered, his voice laced with guilt.
“It’s fine. He’s just really scared,” Claudia said softly, her heart aching for the little boy.
She didn’t know anything about Zander’s mother or what she and Harold had been like together.
But she loved Zander.
Though she wasn’t sleepy anymore, she closed her eyes anyway.

Harold kept looking at her. After a moment, he slid his arm around both of them and kissed the top of her head.
“You’re settling for a guy with a kid. That’s not fair to you.”
“You don’t have to keep saying that,” Claudia murmured. “Honestly, I’m the one coming out ahead. I don’t have the family background. I’m not in your league…”
Harold pinched her lips lightly, making her look at him./
It stung a little.
“Don’t say things like that ever again.”
He released her and shifted closer.

Graham had never mentioned anything to her about the engagement–or about the Cross family.
Claudia figured Graham found that kind of payback beneath him. Otherwise, he would’ve married her off there a long time ago..
Why hadn’t he told her anything, though?
She didn’t ask Chelsea. Chelsea would’ve sugarcoated it. Instead, she asked Darren about the Cross family.
Darren told her there were plenty of Crosses in the Southhall neighborhood, but Harold–he was the wild card of the Cross family, the one who did as he pleased.
That was when Claudia understood why the Cross family had sent her Harvey, the most compliant one. Harold had been the famous “problem child” back in the day.
But now, after spending time with him, he didn’t seem anything like the stories.
The next morning, Harold left early.
Claudia and Zander slept in until past ten.
She saw the message Harold left: he’d arranged for Roger to look after Zander full–time that day.
Claudia was fine with that. After breakfast with Zander, she planned to head to the hospital.
Downstairs, Roger was already waiting.
“Roger!” Zander recognized him right away–Harold had introduced them once before.
“Claudia,” Roger greeted her politely before helping Zander into the car.
