“Did my brother give you anything totally cheesy?” Henrietta plucked a halfopen tulip and handed it to Claudia. “I hear couples are into that kind of sappy stuff.”

Zander mimicked her, gathering a few flowers of his own nearby.

He straightened up, holding a mismatched handful of tulips. From now on, just ask me whatever you want to know. Don’t keep it to yourself. I’m not great at guessing what’s on someone’s mind–that’s on me. I should’ve told you sooner.”

He went on, “Zander’s my comrade’s son from my Army days. His mom passed away when he was born, grandparents weren’t in the picture, so I took him in under my name. Not many people know. I didn’t bring him home until after I left the service and explained things to the family.”

“It doesn’t. I like him,” she said, looking straight at him.

Harold gave a slow, satisfied nod, exhaling quietly.

“And that thing with Keith–that wasn’t real either. I’d barely spoken to her.”

“I know.” Claudia felt as if a weight had lifted from her chest.

Harold reached for her hand. “Come on, let’s get some dinner.”

She placed her hand in his, and they walked back side by side.

He led her to put the flowers in water. “I heard your mom likes tulips,” Claudia said, admiring them. She liked them too.

“Yeah. You?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

They fell into a comfortable silence until the housekeeper called from the kitchen that dinner was ready.

Damian stepped out of the elevator holding Isabelle’s hand, both chatting and laughing.
