When Claudia slipped into the wedding gown, she took everyone’s breath away–even more so than before.
Just as Henrietta tried to peek from behind, Harold stepped in and nudged her aside.
“Go on, get out,” he said, his brow slightly furrowed.
Claudia felt her cheeks grow warm.
A moment earlier, she’d noticed the faint pink mark on her shoulder in the mirror. Harvey must have seen it, and now Harold clearly had too.
That was why he’d pushed Henrietta away.
Henrietta pouted. “Seriously, Harold? You’re that possessive? Can’t even let me look?”
Harold didn’t reply. Instead, he untied the straps, scooped Zander into his arms, gently guided Henrietta out, and then drew the curtain closed so Claudia could change in private.
Claudia held the front of her dress and let out a slow breath.
Outside, Henrietta shot Harold an annoyed look. “So when did you two even meet? Wasn’t that dress meant for Claudy? You’re letting Claudia wear it? Harvey is gonna lose it. That’s his-”
She’d been away at college all this time and had no idea what had been going on at home.
Harold gave her a look that clearly said, “Drop it.”
Henrietta swallowed the rest of her sentence.
“Daddy, are you marrying Mommy?” Zander asked, tilting his head up.
“Yes,” Harold answered simply.
Henrietta leaned closer to Harold and lowered her voice. “You remember that gorgeous senior I told you about? The one I wanted to set you up with, but you brushed me off? How’d you even pull this off? And you’re already getting married? Did you talk her into it or something?”
Harold frowned at her.
She always had too much to say.
Henrietta had brought it up before, but back then his mind was completely occupied with Claudia, and he hadn’t paid ony attention to her teasing.
“Alright, alright, I’ll stop asking. I’ll just ask her myself later.” Henrietta decided she was done talking to Harold—he never gave a decent reply anyway.
Once Claudia had changed and stepped out, Zander ran over, arms raised, asking to be picked up.
She bent down and lifted him with a smile.

“This is my wife,” Harold told Henrietta, a knowing look on his face that left her to piece together the rest on her own.
“No way,” Henrietta whispered, feeling like she’d just stumbled onto some major family gossip.
Harold pinched her arm discreetly.
Henrietta winced and immediately sealed her lips. “Hi, Claudia. You took absolutely beautiful.”
Then she frowned at Harold and muttered under her breath, “You two don’t match at all, by the way.”
“Don’t mind her,” Harold said to Claudia.
Claudia smiled faintly. These siblings were something else.
While Harold had the staff carefully pack away the wedding gown and jewelry, Henrietta took Claudia downstairs to look around the house.
Zander, of course, tagged along.
Harold stood for a moment, rubbing the black credit card in his hand–the one Claudia had handed him earlier–before his gaze drifted absently toward the wedding gown now stored in its case.
His thoughts wandered as Henrietta’s chatter floated up from below.
“Claudia, he’s got such a bad temper. What do you even see in him?”
Claudia set Zander down gently. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen him lose his temper.”
Henrietta let out a dry laugh. “Well, you’ve trained him well, then/Trust me, he can be really harsh.”
Harsh–Claudia had seen glimpses of that side–but he’d never directed it toward her.
Harold watched them from the upstairs balcony.
Claudia and Henrietta strolled past the red maple trees in the yard. The playful golden retriever that lived nearby came bounding over, circling them happily.
When Claudia noticed Zander crouching down, watching a line of ants, she quietly asked Henrietta, “Does Zander’s mother look a lot like me?”
“Huh?” Henrietta was caught off guard but quickly composed herself. “My brother hasn’t told you?”
“I didn’t want to bring it up with him,” Claudia admitted softly. She was afraid of stirring up painful memories.
Henrietta leaned in closer. “Zander isn’t my brother’s biological son. Just… please don’t ever say anything like that in front of Zander, okay?”
“Zander isn’t Harold’s son?”
Henrietta shook her head, then accidentally caught Harold’s gaze from the balcony above.
She quickly looked away and shut her mouth, not daring to say another word.
