He had just stepped away when Darren wrapped up his own tasks and came downstairs looking for Claudia.

They ran into each other at the outdoor dining terrace. A small ensemble was playing violin on a stage set up outside. She was seated near the railing, watching moonlight shimmer on the water.

Darren walked over and took the chair opposite her. “Every time I invite you to one of these events, you’re too busy. But you show up with Harold.”

A faint smile touched her lips.

“Just heard about the Cross family situation,” Darren said casually. “Doesn’t sound like a big deal, really. Nothing for us to do–Mr. Harvey Cross makes one call, Harold runs point, and it’s handled.”

Claudia let out a quiet breath. “Good.”

Darren eyed her curiously. “So you’re really marrying him in November?”

She nodded. A few days earlier, Harold had asked her for the wedding guest list, and Darren had already received their invitation.

“That announcement came out of nowhere,” Darren admitted. He hadn’t wanted to bring it up, but he couldn’t shake the worry that Harold might have pressured Claudia into this.

He still remembered the kindness her grandfather, Graham, had shown him in the past. He’d never asked about her relationship with Harold before because he never seriously thought they’d end up together.

Why would someone like Claudia choose a rough–around–the–edges guy like Harold? However you looked at it, the two of them just didn’t seem to match.

“That kid–is he yours or Harold’s?” Darren asked, deliberately using Harold’s first name.

“Zander is the son of Harold’s late army buddy. He’s not biologically Harold’s.”

“You two haven’t even figured your own stuff out, and you’re playing mom and dad to someone else’s kid,” Darren muttered under his breath. “With your background, you could have anyone. Why settle for a guy who’s already raising a child?”

Claudia gave a soft laugh. “You’re acting strange today.”

Darren had never been one to meddle in her life. But now that marriage was on the table, he couldn’t help feeling protective.

Earlier, he’d seen Harold kiss her–it felt like Claudia was being steered along, unable to push back.

He wasn’t romantically interested in her himself, but both he and Shawn owed a lot to Graham’s past generosity. Claudia’s own standing was considerable; she didn’t need to marry the first guy who came along.

Claudia didn’t hide anything. She explained to Darren about the marriage agreement.

He sighed. “If you’d picked someone like Mr. Harvey Cross, your net worth would’ve doubled overnight.”

Claudia offered a small, knowing smile but didn’t comment.

Darren took the hint. “Alright, I’ll keep an ear out about the Cross family and update you if anything changes.”

“Thanks.”

Claudia watched him walk away. More guests were drifting out onto the deck for fresh air. She listened to the music a little longer, then stood to leave.

On her way out, she crossed paths with Loretta and her two brothers.

Loretta clenched her jaw, but with Harold nearby, she held her tongue.

Harvey had thrown some contracts to the Flood family’s company recently, which had smoothed things over for the time being. That, combined with Harold publicly calling off the engagement, had left Loretta thoroughly humiliated.

A few days ago, she’d overheard someone mention that Harold was sending out wedding invitations, and it had made her blood boil.

Now her voice dripped with sarcasm. “Ms. Bowman sure has a sunny outlook. Doesn’t even mind that Harold comes with a ready–made family.”

Claudia replied evenly, “Why would I mind? I didn’t go through childbirth, and it’s no trouble on my part -yet someone already calls me Mom. Sounds like a good deal to me!

Then she walked past them.

Claudia made her way back toward the main ballroom. Harold was sitting on a sofa, typing out a text to her. Before he could send it, he glanced up and saw her approaching.

She caught a glimpse of the screen–he’d saved her name as “Baby“.

“Want to grab something else to eat?” Harold reached out to draw her closer.

“Not here.”

Just sitting in the bustling hall made her uneasy–the noise, the smell of alcohol and perfume mixing in the air.

“Let’s head back, then. I’ll have room service send something up.” Harold picked up his suit jacket.

Claudia slipped her arm through his, and they made their exit.

They had barely stepped out of the banquet area when a commotion erupted from the deck.
