Harold slipped an arm around her shoulders, giving a comforting squeeze. “I believe you,” he said softly.

Loretta was still yelling, her voice sharp with anger.

A small crowd had begun to gather, curious and concerned. The event manager stepped in, asking people to clear the area. He suggested Loretta go change first while they pulled the security footage from upstair

Loretta sniffed coldly. She was certain Claudia had shoved her.

It was late, and many guests had already left. Her brothers had been networking with other business associates, so she’d decided to take a stroll alone. That was when someone–deliberately, she felt–pushed her into the water.

And those eyes–she’d seen them clearly. They held the same cold intensity as when Claudia had struck her brother.

In the dizzying moment of the fall, she’d noticed the person was dressed in black. There was no mistake.

Now she worried Harold might tamper with the footage. She insisted her brothers accompany the staff to ensure nothing happened to the recording.

Wrapped in a towel, Loretta trembled. Late September air was mild, but the ocean water had been icy. By the time they fished her out, the chill had seeped deep into her bones.

In the lounge, Claudia sat relaxed on the sofa, unfazed. Harold settled beside her, crossing his legs and stifling a yawn.

“How can this be…” she muttered, then glanced again at Claudia’s eyes.

They were exactly as she remembered.

Harold yawned again, and the staff member showed the footage to him and Claudia as well. Both watched -it was unmistakably a man.

Tired of the drama, Harold rose, taking Claudia’s hand. He led her over to Loretta, who shrank back instinctively.

“Apologize,” Harold said, his voice even.

Claudia’s hand felt warm inside Harold’s.

Loretta studied Claudia’s face once more. Claudia had only been gone a few minutes–no time to change and return. But those eyes…

Her brothers steadied her, staying silent.

“I’m… sorry,” Loretta forced out through gritted teeth, her face flushed as she bowed stiffly.

As Harold guided Claudia away, he caught Howard’s eye. Howard gave a slight nod.

They took their time walking back, the night breeze tugging at loose strands of Claudia’s hair. Harold adjusted his jacket around her shoulders.

“The security camera was right above her,” Claudia wondered aloud. “Why was she so convinced it was me?”

Harold had been pondering the same thing. The image of that suited man flickered in his mind.

“Ding-”

His phone buzzed.

Harold pulled it out. An unknown number–the same one that had messaged him earlier to find Claudia.

“Come to the deck alone. Now.”

He stopped walking.

Claudia looked at him, then at the phone. Harold turned off the screen before she could read it.

“Go upstairs and rest,” he told her. “I’ll be right back.”

Something in his expression gave her pause, but she nodded and stepped into the elevator alone. Once the doors closed, Harold cut through the thinning banquet crowd and made his way outside.
