“Dolores, that’s enough.” Harvey stared at Dolores, who was still standing there, with clear disbelief in his
eyes.
Howard’s eyes widened slightly.
Dolores immediately fell silent
Wait–didn’t he tell me to speak up? Wasn’t he asking for a compliment? Why is he upset now?
Men really were impossible to figure out.
Harvey was visibly annoyed with her.
Howard held back a laugh. He’d been half–asleep just moments ago, but now this was more entertaining than going back to bed.
Harvey shot a look toward Howard by the doorway. “Get in here.”
Howard rushed indoors and brushed past Dolores, his whole demeanor plainly signaling he was leaving her to handle things alone.
Only then did Dolores notice Howard had been outside the whole time.
Perfect. If I messed up somehow, let fate sort it out. Don’t drag me into an awkward mess in front of our manager. There goes my monthly bonus.
Harvey walked over to Dolores and tugged the jacket off her shoulders.
With her hair slightly messy, she looked both innocent and a little helpless.
“Take this and get it cleaned,” he said, pushing the jacket into her arms.
“Yes, sir.” Dolores pursed her lips and glanced toward Howard.
Howard gave a slight wave, signaling she should make her exit.
Just as she turned to leave, Harvey called her back. “Come here.”
Dolores turned with a forced polite smile. “Mr. Cross…?”
“Straighten up this room before you go.”
With that, Harvey picked up his laptop from the table and walked out.
Howard stood there confused for a second, then quickly followed.
Harvey spoke without turning. “Which room is yours?”
Howard hesitated. “Huh?”

“Your room–where is it?”
Resigned, Howard led him to his standard suite down the hall.

Dolores watched the door shut firmly behind them and whispered to the empty room, “Are you coming back to sleep later?”
A small smile crept onto her face.
Sure, she might have annoyed her boss, but he looked almost amusing when he was irritated.
She set the jacket aside, tidied the scattered papers and his empty glass from the table, then poured herself a glass of water.
Harvey and Howard ended up squeezed into the modest standard room talking for a good half hour. Eventually, Harvey had enough–he handed off the remaining work to Howard and left on his own.
Howard couldn’t help feeling unfairly put upon.
On his way back to the suite, Harvey passed Claudia’s room. He paused for a brief moment, then turned and continued down the hall.
Back in her room, Claudia had just settled Zander to sleep. She had intended to talk with Darren after putting him down, but exhaustion took over and she drifted off as well.
Some time later, a knock at the door stirred her awake.
Moving carefully so as not to wake Zander, she slipped on her shoes and went to the door.
Through the peephole, she saw Harvey.
It was well past midnight–why was he here now?
Claudia didn’t overthink it. She opened the door just a crack.
“Harvey, it’s late. Is everything okay?”
He carried a faint trace of alcohol on his breath. His eyes rested on her for a couple of seconds before he pushed the door open gently and stepped inside, closing it behind him.
Claudia instinctively took two steps back.
“Harvey…”
His gaze drifted over her thin sleepwear. Though modest, the lightweight fabric hinted softly at the curves
beneath.
“Harvey, you should…” Claudia retreated another step.

“I came to see you,” he said, his tone leaving no room for doubt.
She replied quickly, “Whatever it is, we can talk tomorrow.”
“No. It needs to be now.”
Harvey closed the distance between them and drew her into his arms.
“Harvey–let go of me!”
But no matter how she tried to pull away, he held her firmly, quietly, until her resistance faded.

Then, close to her ear, his voice came low and strained. “You were supposed to be with me, you know that? You were always supposed to be mine…”
Claudia went still.
He’d mentioned before that there was someone he cared about, which had made it easier for her to step aside–especially since she was already married to Harold by then.
“Harvey, you’ve had too much to drink,” she said softly, easing herself out of his embrace.
He released her, but his eyes never left her face.
“Claudy, be with me. Please.”
“No, Harvey. You’re not thinking clearly right now.”
Pain flashed in his eyes. He took her arms gently but earnestly. “Claudy, you were meant to be mine.”
Claudia jolted awake, sitting upright in bed, her mind slow to settle.
She was damp with sweat, head buzzing faintly.
The dream had felt unsettlingly real.
