Harold crouched down and lifted Zander into his arms. “Daddy missed Mommy, so he wanted a hug. And I missed you too, buddy.”
He planted a kiss on Zander’s check, making the little boy giggle and wrap his arms around his neck.
After getting Zander settled on the couch with cartoons, Harold took Claudia’s hand and led her back to the bedroom.
From his suitcase, he pulled out two boxes of sanitary pads, opened them, and slipped a couple into her purse–just in case she needed one in a pinch and couldn’t find any.
So that was what he’d meant by “bringing something“.
Claudia sat on the edge of the bed, watching him with an amused smile. She could buy those anywhere. “You came all this way just to drop these off?”
“That was just the excuse,” Harold admitted, finishing up and walking over to her. He placed his hands on either side of her, caging her gently between his arms.
“Yesterday on the phone… you said you love me. Was that for real?” He’d come to hear it face to face. “Zander’s not here now, so you can’t say it just for his sake.”
He needed to know she meant it–that it wasn’t something she’d said only because their son was listening.
Claudia bit her lip, dropping her gaze to her lap. “Maybe,” she murmured softly. “Probably…”

Harold didn’t rush her. A gentle smile touched his lips as he reached out and cupped her cheek.
She drew a quiet breath, feeling his presence surround her. His rough thumb brushed over her skin before tracing the curve of her lips.
He’d come because he wanted to hear it from her himself–to know how she truly felt. But he also didn’t want her to say it just to make Zander happy.
“Uncle! Auntie!” Zander’s voice carried down the hallway. The doorbell had rung, but neither of them had noticed inside the room.
Startled, Claudia pushed lightly at Harold’s chest. He swallowed hard, following her gaze downward before turning away abruptly. They both took a second to collect themselves.
It was Harvey at the door. Zander had seen him on the monitor and let him in, but Harvey stayed just outside.
Harold had already been there earlier when Harvey picked up Henrietta.
“My httle Zander.” Henrietta cooed, bending to scoop him up.

She was about to step inside when Harvey stopped her. “Let’s head upstairs first.”

Henrietta paused, looking like she wanted to ask why, then seemed to catch on. She pressed her lips together, a knowing smirk playing on her face.
Just then, Harold walked out of the bedroom. “Hey Harvey.”
Harvey said. “We’re all going up to eat. You coming?”
“Yeah, we’ll be right there.” Harold glanced toward Claudia, who had followed him out, and reached for her
hand.
Claudia walked over but discreetly nudged his hand away, not letting him hold it. Good thing they’d come out when they did–with everyone around, she wasn’t brave enough for public affection.
Harvey turned and led the way out, taking Zander from Henrietta. “I’ve got him.”
Henrietta stuck close, making faces at Zander as they walked.
The group followed Harvey to the elevator, with Dolores lingering at the back.
Howard wasn’t around–Darren and Nora had left for a dinner banquet–so it was just the few of them tonight.
“You know, I might just grab something on my own,” Dolores whispered to Henrietta as they stepped out of the elevator. “It feels weird crashing your family dinner.”
“Why would you skip a good meal? Besides, with me here, my brother won’t give you a hard time,” Henrietta said, looping an arm through hers to drag her along.
Dolores smiled weakly. She’d caused her boss enough trouble the past couple of days. Being the only outsider at a family dinner–how comfortable was that supposed to feel?
She clutched Harvey’s jacket in her hands. If she didn’t have to meet a client with him later, she would’ve made an excuse and bolted for the restroom already.
“It’s a family thing. I’ll just feel out of place,” she murmured, already eyeing an escape route.
Before she could slip away, Harvey slowed down and glanced/back at her.
“Come on,” he said dryly. “I personally poisoned your plate. It’d go to waste if you refuse to take a bite.”
Dolores couldn’t help thinking Harvey was starting to hold a grudge.
Henrietta overheard and muffled a laugh. “My brother never gets worked up. What did you do to him?”
“What do you mean, ‘what did I do’-” Dolores cut herself off. That came out wrong.
Harold shot a look at Harvey, grinning. “Did Dolores mess up or something?”
