Harold mentioned casually over dinner, “I ran into Ms. Tyson at the grocery store earlier. She made sure to ask when we’d be back for Thanksgiving.”
Dolores listened, then glanced toward Harvey before murmuring, “That’ll depend on Mr. Cross‘ schedule.”
A faint smile touched Harvey’s lips. “We’ll see how things go. If I get another mosquito bite tonight, I’m putting you on a business trip overseas tomorrow.”
She held up one hand in playful pledge. “I swear I’ll keep every bug far away from you!”
“Typical corporate drone,” Henrietta remarked, shaking her head as she helped herself to more food.
“Dig in,” Harvey said casually. “Once we finish the memorial observance tomorrow morning, we’ll all head back home together.”
Dolores allowed herself a small, contented smile.
Harvey never really treated her just as an assistant. It felt more like being his right–hand person.
Across the table, Claudia stayed quiet, focused on sharing the meal with Zander.
Little by little, she was beginning to sense the warmth of something like family.
Around her, the conversation flowed easily–laughter and light chatter. Harvey truly didn’t put on any airs.
Harold had a stronger presence; when he spoke, it carried a protective, older–brother kind of tone.
They chatted among themselves now and then. Every so often, Harold would serve Claudia some of her favorite dishes from the shared plates.
Henrietta, ever the gossip, tried prying about what had happened the night before.
But Dolores remembered Harvey’s warning that morning–he’d told her not to breathe a word about him taking his shirt off–so she kept her mouth shut.
Besides, Harvey was shooting her a look that said she’d regret it if she slipped up.
“Harvey,” Harold began, his eyes drifting toward Dolores briefly.
Harvey made a low sound of acknowledgment and took a sip of iced juice.
Harold seemed to want to ask something, but hesitated. He simply frowned slightly.
Dolores was already engaged–to what everyone called her “high–school sweetheart“. Most everyone around them thought she was settling far beneath her station.
The guy didn’t have the greatest character either. Last time, at the precinct, Harvey had even thrown a punch at him.

Her parents weren’t thrilled; her father owned a local wine distributorship, her mother was a college professor, yet here Dolores was, stubbornly lovesick.
If Harvey wanted to step in, it wouldn’t be impossible. He’d had plenty of chances. So why hadn’t he made
a move?
“What’s on your mind?” Harvey asked, noticing Harold’s lingering gaze.
Harold served himself another spoonful of mashed potatoes and kept his voice low. “Dolores is a good person too. Especially since she’s still not married.”
“Cough, cough-” Harvey suddenly choked on his juice.
Dolores, seated beside him, quickly passed him a napkin.
Claudia watched with an amused smile.
So Harold had picked up on it as well.
Harvey really did seem to have some kind of soft spot for Dolores. Some of the things he did for her went well beyond boss–and–employee–heck, even beyond just neighbors.
But he didn’t seem to realize it himself.
Harold smiled slightly and refilled Harvey’s glass.
Once he’d recovered, Harvey shot his brother a stern glare. “Don’t talk nonsense.”.
“Alright, alright, got it.” Harold just smiled and didn’t push further.
Henrietta leaned in, curious. “Harold, what shady thing did you just whisper to Harvey?”
Harold glanced at Dolores but stayed silent.
Harvey cut off Henrietta’s train of thought. “Harold said he’s thinking of sending you back to the training facility for a refresher.”
“No way!” She instantly clammed up. “I won’t ask anymore, okay?”
Harold once sent Henrietta away to an intensive bootcamp for a full month. She returned sun–kissed, physically hardened and rougher around the edges, and that training wound up proving really handy later
The persistent creep who’d kept pestering her vanished for good once he learned her elder brother ran a corporate firm as CEO and her younger sibling had the solid, muscular build of a college football linebacker.”
As dinner was winding down, Harold’s phone buzzed.
The private dining room was pretty noisy–Zander and Henrietta kept bursting into laughter–so he stepped outside to take the call.
