“Yeah. Harold agreed, though uncertainty lingered in his voice. “But I still can’t tell if Harvey actually has feelings for Dolores or not.”
Everything Harvey did around Dolores had been pretty low–key–no grand gestures, no obvious flirting. Just an occasional glance that was hard to read. And in Harold’s book, that didn’t really count as liking
someone.
What puzzled Harold was this: if Harvey didn’t like Dolores, he could’ve just treated her like any other employee.
Even with Amanda and Henrietta around, Dolores wouldn’t have gotten all those special perks otherwise. Take tonight’s dinner, or that time at the hospital when Harvey’s jacket ended up on Dolores‘ shoulders.
Damian had once mentioned that you only take your clothes off for someone you care about, and you only put them on someone you care about. Harvey had always been disciplined, almost rigidly proper. But ever since Dolores joined the team, he’d slowly started bending his own rules.
Dolores was lively and full of energy, and she and Henrietta clicked right away. Some of Dolores‘ easygoing, carefree vibe seemed to rub off on Harvey over time.
“Harvey did tell me he already liked someone else,” Claudia said after a moment of quiet. Honestly, that was the only reason she hadn’t felt worse about marrying Harold—because Harvey had claimed his heart was already taken.
Harold met her eyes. Both of them feared Harvey might just be saying that. If that were true, then Harvey was really getting the short end of the stick. Harold had seen firsthand how deeply Harvey cared for Claudia.
If Harvey didn’t actually have feelings for Dolores, then nearly everything he’d done lately could be read as a sign he was still into Claudia.
Reaching over, Harold took Claudia’s hand. Part of him wanted to ask her again if she had real feelings for him, but he didn’t dare push it.
Their marriage had started without any romantic foundation, so it wouldn’t have been surprising if she didn’t feel that way toward him.
Claudia seemed to sense what he was thinking. When he held her hand, she gently held his back.
“Are you feeling bad for Harvey?” she asked softly.
Harold gave a slight nod.
“You all keep saying you respect my choice,” Claudia murmured. “And I chose you, didn’t I? Your name is on the marriage license now.”
“I know,” Harold replied quietly. Still, he worried that what Harvey felt for Claudia went beyond simple affection.

He couldn’t shake the thought that Harvey might be using Dolores as a cover–acting close to her in front of everyone, but carefully keeping boundaries since she was already engaged.
Harvey had plenty of women around him, but outside of work, Dolores was the only one he really spent time with. She made for the perfect decoy.
“I like you, Harold.”
Just as his thoughts were sinking low, Claudia’s voice reached him in the dim light.
“What did you say?”
“If you didn’t hear it, never mind…” she mumbled, her cheeks growing warm. She had no idea if Harold could see her blushing in the shadows.
She started to pull her hand back, but Harold caught it again.
In one smooth motion, he guided her against the floor–to–ceiling window. Below them, city lights glittered; in front of him, her breaths came unevenly. Behind them, Zander slept soundly.
Claudia lost herself in his kiss. Her thin pajama top slid down to her waist, and his hand settled firmly on the small of her back.
She only caught her breath when his lips traveled to her neck.
Then the clasp at her back came undone.
Suddenly he was everywhere, his touch overwhelming yet familiar.
Harold learned fast. Some things came naturally, and he’d gotten good–very good.
Foreheads pressed together, Harold watched her gasp for air before slowly pulling back.
“I really, really like you,” he said, his voice rough with emotion. “I was already having those kinds of thoughts about you when I went out to the courtyard to get you that night.”
“What?” Claudia stared, stunned by his admission.
He’d called it “those kinds of thoughts.” Anyone overhearing would’ve thought he sounded like a total creep.
But Harold cradled her face with one hand, sincerity pouring from his words. “But I knew you were Harvey’s. Everyone knew. Even Harvey knew. So I didn’t dare run into you. I just kept waiting for him to come back.”
Claudia held his gaze. So that explained why Harold had basically vanished for two weeks after dropping her off at Moonhaven Villa. He’d been avoiding her the whole time.
“I was scared that the more I saw you, the more I’d fall for you.” Truth was, Harold had seen it coming. Every encounter left him liking her a little more.
