“Great–Grandma, can I have a pet goose? Please?” Zander chirped, turning his big eyes toward Regina.
Harold shot a look at Claudia and muttered under his breath, “If he drags a live goose into the house in a few days, I’m not letting him through the door. Either that, or I’ll turn it into dinner when he’s fast asleep.”
Claudia chuckled softly. “I have a feeling you were exactly like him when you were little.”
“Oh really? How so?”
“A bit of a troublemaker, but still sweet when it counted.”
Harold’s lips curved into a grin. “So that means you like me now, right?”
“You wish,” she replied, her voice dropping to a whisper.
“I’m just saying–Zander and I share the same charming personality. You adore him, so naturally you’d – adore me too. Besides, I’m way better behaved than he is.” He was laying it on thick, and they both knew it.
Claudia pressed her lips together to keep from laughing out loud.
Just then, Henrietta hurried over, slipped her arm through Claudia’s, and fell into step beside her.
“Claudia, you’ve got my back, right?” she whispered, leaning in with a pleading look.
Harold raised an eyebrow, but before he could say anything, Claudia asked, “Did Harvey yell at you?”
“Yeah. He was so harsh!”
Harold couldn’t help jumping in. “What did you do to set him off?”
Harvey was famously even–tempered–the kind of guy who never lost his cool. The last person who’d truly annoyed him had been Dolores. And now, here was Henrietta managing the same feat.
No wonder those two were thick as thieves. It made sense now.
Henrietta bit her lip and repeated to Harold exactly what she’d told Dolores earlier. “Harold, be honest- wouldn’t Dolores make an amazing sister–in–law? Am I wrong?”
Harold looked like he wanted to scold her too. “Dolores is still engaged. Bringing this up now is just asking for trouble. If word got out, people would say Harvey’s trying to steal another man’s fiancée. And if Dolores actually ended up with him, the gossip would tear her apart.”
You couldn’t just jump from one relationship into another–not without causing a stir.
“Oh…” Henrietta’s shoulders slumped. “Great. There goes my allowance for next month…”
She’d almost gotten Dolores into real trouble.
Harvey threw a stern glance her way, but since she was tucked safely beside Claudia, he let it go.

Henrietta peeked at him nervously. Thank goodness Claudia was there as a buffer.

She used to be the darling of the family, but lately she felt like she was on thin ice. Sticking close to Claudia was her best shot at avoiding any real damage.
Claudia gave her a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry. Harvey’s not actually going to hurt you. He’s probably just stressed about Dolores. Most of that frustration isn’t really about you.”
Henrietta thought it over and nodded slowly. That did make sense.
“Claudia, come with me after Thanksgiving,” she blurted out.
“Where to?”
“To win Dolores over.” Henrietta knew she couldn’t pull it off alone.
Harold watched the two of them for a moment, then sped up to catch Harvey.
Claudia’s gaze followed Harold and Harvey as they walked ahead. She’d never been involved in anything like this before, but Harold had filled her in the night before.
“Please?” Henrietta begged. “Otherwise, Harvey might actually disown me. He’s my only hope for an allowance.”
“Alright,” Claudia agreed with a soft laugh.
Henrietta really had it made–two older brothers, one stern and one gentle, both wrapped around her finger. And now they both cared deeply about Dolores too.
That evening, they decided to set up dinner outside in the yard.
Zander had been crying on and off, refusing to sit at the table.
After changing, Claudia stepped outside and found Harold holding him while everyone around them chuckled–even Harold was smiling.
She walked over. “What’s going on?”
“Mommy…” Zander reached for her, and she settled him on her lap, gently patting his back. “What’s wrong, sweetie?”
“Daddy cooked the goose…” His tears started flowing again, harder this time.
Claudia couldn’t help laughing softly. There really was no consoling him now.
Finally, Regina promised him two goslings, and his sobs faded into sniffles.
“Alright, everyone, let’s eat. Everything’s ready,” Damian called out, guiding Regina and Louis to their seats
first.
The nanny took Zander to eat while he kept an eye on the geese.
