Harvey glanced at Michael and said, "Look into Darrell over at Brady Group. See if there's anything going on with him lately."
Michael was puzzled. Brady Group and Cypher Group had always kept their distance—no rivalry, no partnership. The request seemed to come out of thin air.
But if Harvey wanted it done, he'd get it done.
"I'll start digging tomorrow."
"Good."
Just then, Harvey's phone buzzed. It was Amanda.
"Hey, Amanda... Yeah, Dolores is with me... We're heading back now..."
He slid into the driver's seat as he spoke.
Michael watched him go, muttering under his breath, "So they really are neighbors... or something."
For now, he let go of the idea that there might be more going on.
Once on the road, Harvey frowned.
He'd just remembered—Dolores' parents weren't in town.
He glanced at her in the passenger seat. She was slumped against the window, eyebrows pinched, looking completely out of it.
"Your place is empty tonight. You want to just stay at mine?"
"Henrietta's not home... I can't stay at your place alone," she mumbled, her words slurred.
Dolores had stayed over before, but always when his sister was around.
Showing up with her drunk and alone—that'd be hard to explain.
He leaned over and adjusted her seat, letting it recline slightly so she could rest easier.
He was about to ask if she wanted him to drop her at a hotel instead when he noticed her eyes were already closed.
Harvey sighed softly and turned the car toward his own building.
The next morning, Dolores woke to the murmur of voices.
She sat up slowly, disoriented—then realized she was in unfamiliar pajamas, and all her makeup had been removed.
Her heart jumped. She patted herself down quickly, relieved to find everything felt normal.
Memories from the night before drifted back: Harvey helping her into the elevator, his voice low in her ear.
"Fine, you can crash here tonight. Just don't throw up on my bed."
And her own muffled reply. "Mmm... you're so annoying."
She buried her face in her hands. How could I act like that in front of my boss?
After a steadying breath, she slipped on the guest slippers and padded quietly toward the door.
The moment she stepped into the hallway, she froze.
Michael and several senior executives were seated in the living room. Harvey sat across from them, his back to her.
Noticing the sudden shift in their expressions, Harvey turned to look over his shoulder.
He stilled.
I completely forgot she was here.
"Go back inside," he told her evenly, though his mind raced. For a second, he had no idea how to smooth this over.
Flushed, Dolores spun around and hurried into the room she'd just left.
Harvey's brow furrowed as he watched her disappear—into his bedroom.
