Chapter 888 Waiting for Breakfast
“Don’t ever scare me like that again, sweetie. I get so worried when I can’t find you,” Claudia said, holding Zander close in a tight hug.
Zander wasn’t his usual energetic self like the day before. He stayed quiet in her arms and whispered, “I’m sorry, Mommy.”
“Listen to me–I would never leave you. Even if one day you have a little brother or sister, I’ll love you just the same. You’ll be the big brother then, and you’ll get to show them how it’s done.”
“I know, Mommy,” Zander murmured, clinging to her.
Just then, Harold walked into the room. Seeing the two of them curled up and talking softly, he set a glass of honey water on the nightstand, then lay down behind Claudia, wrapping his arms around both of them.
“Hey, you,” Claudia said, glancing back at him.
Harold’s bare chest and athletic build could make anyone blush. He’d come in wearing only a pair of sweatpants, and now he was holding them from behind.
“He’s been waiting for you,” Harold said softly. “Wanted you to wake up so we could all have breakfast together.”
Claudia paused. “He hasn’t eaten yet?”
“None of us has. He insisted on waiting for you.”
She looked down at Zander in her arms and couldn’t help but kiss his forehead. “Alright then, let’s get up. I’ll take you both to breakfast.”
Harold smiled.
The three of them got out of bed together.
“Don’t forget to drink this after you wash up,” Harold reminded her, nodding toward the honey water.
“Okay,” Claudia said, hurrying into the bathroom.
“Your mom’s such a scatterbrain sometimes,” Harold chuckled, holding Zander as he watched her dash off.
Zander shook his head. “No, she’s not.”
“Alright, alright, she’s not,” Harold agreed, sitting on the edge of the bed to play with him.
From the bathroom, Claudia could hear them joking around while she brushed her teeth. Her gaze accidentally fell on her collarbone in the mirror.
Harold must have kissed her there again last night while she was asleep.
She pulled her collar aside slightly to look, and a faint blush spread across her cheeks.
During breakfast, Claudia noticed Zander seemed much quieter than usual. He ate on his own without being prompted and spoke very little.
After the meal, he went to play with his two pet geese in the yard. He didn’t run around excitedly or laugh as freely as he used to.
At first, Claudia thought he was just shaken up from what Keith had said. But as the days went on, his subdued mood lingered.
Three days before the wedding, Claudia brought Zander back to their old countryside cottage -the place she still considered home. Harold had already arranged for it to be decorated.
The once simple, cozy cottage was now warmly adorned with wedding touches, filled with a cheerful, celebratory atmosphere.
