Her fingers traced a path from Harvey’s jawline down to his throat, coming to rest lightly over his Adam’s apple. Then, almost playfully, she drew a slow line across his neck with her fingertip-a pretend cut.
That was when Dolores noticed it: a faint movement beneath her touch.
Harvey’s Adam’s apple shifted slightly.
Startled, her eyes shot toward the heart monitor. The steady rhythm had quickened, just a little
She hesitated, hand hovering near the nurse call button. What if it was nothing? What if he sank back into stillness the moment she pressed it?
“Harvey…”
His fingers trembled-barely a flutter.
Dolores was still watching his face and missed the movement entirely.
Her gaze drifted from his throat to the door and back again. She reached out once more, letting her nail graze lightly over the same spot on his neck.
Pressing her lips together, she felt a flicker of guilt. This felt like teasing him while he slept.
“If you wake up and find out I did this… don’t be mad,” she whispered, her voice soft in the quiet room. “I’m not trying to cop a feel or anything. Well… maybe a little. But if you do wake up, I think you’d let me get away with it, right?”
A low, awkward laugh escaped her.
Still, he gave no real response.
“Come on, don’t mess with me like this. Just… give me a sign.” She brushed his neck again, then gently pinched his cheek.
Nothing.
Setting the razor aside, Dolores took a breath and pressed her palms together as if steeling herself. “Okay, I’m touching you now. Don’t blame me–you’re the one who won’t wake up.”
She added quietly, almost to convince herself, “The doctor said stimulation might help.”
Then she laid a hand on his chest, eyes fixed on the monitor.
His heart rate rose-but only briefly before settling again.
What was going on?
Just then, she caught movement from the corner of her eye. Harvey’s fingers twitched.
Dolores took his hand in both of hers, her breath catching.
“Are you waking up?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady despite the hope swelling inside her.
Another faint tremor ran through his fingers.
Her eyes stung. She cradled his cold Kand, rubbing-warmth into it. “Then wake up, Harvey… please.”
But he fell still again.
Frustration tightened in her chest. She touched his throat once more.
“Harvey?” she called, leaning closer.
Somewhere in the depths of his mind, Harvey was lost-adrift in an endless ocean, walking barefoot over mist-covered waves. A voice echoed through the fog, calling his name, but he couldn’t find his way toward it.
Dolores watched him, and as the seconds stretched without movement, that fragile spark of hope inside her began to crumble.
Tears slipped down her cheeks. “You can’t do this to me… You were right there.”
She was nearing her limit.
Then an idea came to her.
