Chapter 915 Countryside Retreat
Amanda sensed something was off, but given the undefined nature of their relationship, she didn’t feel comfortable prying.
When Harvey slid into the passenger seat, he threw a glance her way. Harold watched the two of them for a moment before turning to Isabelle. “Do Grandma and Grandpa know Harvey’s going to the countryside to recuperate?”
Isabelle was loading the last of the luggage into the trunk. “You’ve asked that half a dozen times already Trust me, your grandparents have sharper memories than you do.”
A faint smile touched Harvey’s lips as he settled into the car. Nearby, Claudia murmured something to Isabelle, who simply nodded and went on quietly arranging things. Harold shut the trunk with a soff thu
Over to the side, Amanda was speaking with Damian in a hushed tone. “Dora mentioned Harvey’s been having some memory lapses?”
Damian’s eyes drifted toward Harvey in the car, his expression thoughtful. “Seems that way, yeah.” The doctor had assured them it was nothing serious–just exhaustion and needing rest.
Dolores had been looking after Harvey quite a bit lately. Isabelle had briefly filled Damian in after they returned, but he hadn’t fully connected the dots yet. His gaze shifted to Dolores, who kept stealing glances at Harvey.
“Amanda,” Damian began, lowering his voice. “We really owe Dora this time. I was thinking–since her boss is recovering, it makes sense for her to accompany him. Howard’s gone back home to rest up too, and right now, nobody knows Harvey’s routines better than Dora does.
“You know how he is–even on bed rest, he’ll have work with him. Having her around might make things run smoother.”
Amanda considered it and nodded. “That does sound reasonable.”
Quentin chimed in from nearby, “I’m with Damian on this one.”
Dolores, standing a few steps away, wanted to object, but Damian shot her a warm, persuasive smile.
She’d heard plenty about Damian’s reputation back in the day. Harold intimidated her, if she was honest, but Damian could be just as formidable in his own way.
1 And now there was Harvey, too.
Sometimes it felt like all the men in the Cross family had that same bold, unshakable air abour them.
She managed a strained smile. I’m not sure I’m really the right person for this?”
“We’re just talking about you doing your job, nothing beyond that, Quentin pointed out lightly. “If you’re not the right person, who is? You’re still his executive assistant.”
Dolores let out an awkward laugh. She supposed he had a point.
She’d worked alone with Harvey plenty of times before, but now everything felt different. Harvey had confessed to her–how could she just pretend it never happened?
Now, every time she looked at him, his words echoed in her mind.
Would you be willing
What if we got married?
As my girlfriend, can I kiss you?
Her cheeks warmed at the memory.
Before, she would’ve happily followed Harvey anywhere, carrying his files, holding his coat–whatever he needed. Now, she didn’t dare.
Later, Harvey left for the countryside to recuperate at Regina and Louis‘ place.
Dolores stayed home for two full days, but Amanda and Quentin kept nudging her to go see him. She barely even felt brave enough to step outside.
“Do you two know something I don’t?” she finally asked, suspicion in her voice.
Amanda nodded calmly. “We know enough.”
