Chapter 919 Waiting at Home
“Huh?”
“Go home and wait for me.”
“Okay.”
Dolores wasn’t sure what he was planning, but she agreed anyway.
Harvey added, “I’m keeping you to that, you know.”
If she tried to change her mind tomorrow, it would be too late.
He stayed where he was, just watching her.
Feeling a little self-conscious under his gaze, Dolores buried her face in his chest and-summoning some courage-wrapped her arms around him.
A small smile touched her lips.
So his chest was this warm… and was it just her, or was his heartbeat quicker now than it had been back at the hospital, when he’d seemed so steady?
Harvey stroked her hair and held her close, their bodies fitting together as if made to.
“Can I stay over tonight?”
His low voice brushed against her ear, and Dolores went still. The warmth of his breath cascaded over her skin.
Slowly, she pushed back from him. “Not tonight.”
Harvey’s hand settled at her waist, thumb moving in a gentle, absent rhythm.
Dolores kept her palms pressed against his abdomen, holding him at bay, her face flushed as she refused to let him close again
Harvey swallowed. “I won’t do anything.”
“That’s what they all say,” she mumbled, “and it’s never true…”
Harvey couldn’t help a soft laugh. “You don’t want me to?”
She paused, tilting her head up to look at him. Right now, Harvey looked like the kind of charming bauble her mom had always warned her about
“Your hand isn’t even healed yet, Absolutely not.” Dolores frowned. He probably hadn’t come quin this le planning to stay all along
“It won’t get in the way.” Harvey dipped his head, closing the small distance between them to brush a kiss mouth, then another, slow and lingering:
Dolores felt her breath slipping away, he limbs softening
She tried to shrink back, but Harvey’s hand slid to the small of her back, drawing her firmly against him.
The sudden pressure low in her stomach snapped Dolores back to her senses, and she quickly pushed him away
“No…” she stammered, stepping back in a flurry before turning to open the door.
Harvey frowned at her, but before he could say another word, she took his wrist and gently guided him out into the hallway.
The door shut softly behind him.
Dolores turned the lock.
Then she all but dove under the covers, burying her face in the pillow.
Outside, Harvey lingered a moment, licked his lips, and took a steadying breath. Just as he turned to leave, he spotted Louts coming down the stairs holding an empty water glass.
Their eyes met awkwardly.
Louis swiftly turned and headed back up.
Harvey made his own quick retreat to his room.
