She was taken aback. "I never said that! When did I say that?"
Amanda tapped Dolores' forehead lightly with her finger. "You told Henrietta just the other day—don't tell me you've forgotten already."
Did she really say that?
She wracked her brain but couldn't recall ever making such a remark.
On her way back inside, it suddenly dawned on her—she had said it, but only in a moment of anger!
Surely Henrietta hadn't taken it seriously... right?
Now it made her come off as petty and immature.
Once inside, Dolores began carefully unwrapping each of the engagement gifts Harvey had sent, worried she might overlook some hidden surprise tucked inside.
But there were so many presents that it felt like she could spend the entire day opening them and still not finish.
Eventually, her eyes fell on the gift list lying to the side.
The list was filled with all kinds of items—some so rare or luxurious she had barely even heard of them.
Amanda stood nearby, looking both amazed and pleased. "You've really landed on your feet this time. I still can't figure out why someone like Harvey would take an interest in you."
Dolores frowned. "Mom, look how amazing you are—the daughter you raised can't be all that bad. Why would you doubt your own parenting?"
Quentin, sitting on the sofa, shifted uncomfortably. "Dora's always been a handful. I pity Harvey—he'll have his hands full dealing with her later on."
"Well then, why don't we just call off the engagement right now?" Dolores shot back. "It's only next door—won't take more than a few minutes. That way you two won't have to worry, and your precious Harvey won't be stuck with me. Then you can go find someone you actually approve of, and I'll marry whoever's left."
"Always with the sharp tongue!" Amanda chided, though her tone was more worried than upset. "You can't talk like that at Harvey's house. Isabelle is gentle and elegant, Regina was every bit the refined lady, and Claudia is wonderfully talented. What do you have? You'd better learn a thing or two from them."
Dolores wasn't really listening. Her eyes had caught the words "marriage contract" on the gift list, and she immediately started searching through the packages.
Amanda's lecturing continued in the background, but it all went in one ear and out the other.
"Mom, a man from Harvey's world has seen everything—it's not like his taste is that off. And your daughter here graduated at the top of her class. Sure, I might not have much to boast about, but it's not like he needs some superwoman by his side."
Amanda sighed in mild exasperation. "Alright, alright. You're right about everything."
Meanwhile, Quentin was quietly reviewing the family's finances, trying to figure out what they could offer as a wedding gift.
Dolores settled on the floor and opened a deep red box.
Inside was an elegantly framed marriage contract.
The handwriting looked strikingly similar to what she'd seen that day in his grandparents' study out in the countryside.
Earlier, when she'd spotted "marriage contract" on the list, she'd remembered Harvey asking Claudia to help him with his penmanship—he'd been practicing for this.
