Nobody quite caught what Leah said, but Milka let out a soft laugh. “Thank you, Auntie. Mars and I will stay calm.”
“Stay calm? Don’t even think about it! Take it from me—if you try to be too rational about marriage, it’ll never happen. You need a little heat of the moment! That’s how your uncle and I did it—one minute we were talking, the next we were married. What do you young people call it now?”
“A shotgun wedding?”
“No, no—flash wedding! That’s it. It’s a rush, Milka. You and Mars should try it sometime. Doesn’t cost a thing, either.”
They chatted for a bit, until Milka said, “Auntie, I’m still at work. After I clock out, Mars and I will come by to see you and Uncle.”
“Great! You’re really coming after work? I still remember your favorite dishes. Just wait—tonight, I’ll cook them all for you.”
So, Milka didn’t really have a way out—she had to go.
After she hung up, a bright smile spread across her face. She practically floated through the office, and her coworkers couldn’t help but notice.
“Milka, you seem happy. Good news?”
“Pretty good news, yeah.”
“It’s either career or love. Is it your boyfriend? Things moving along?”
When happiness bubbles up, you just have to share it. Milka grinned. “He’ll be back with the team soon.”
“Oh right, Milka, your boyfriend’s on the squad. You two hardly get to see each other—how do you even keep the relationship going?”
Milka sighed, dreamy and content. “If all goes smoothly, that’ll be my next challenge.”
If her parents made up, she wouldn’t have to worry anymore. Then she and Mars could finally move things forward.
Milka’s little chat with her coworkers didn’t go unnoticed—someone was listening, and it sparked an idea.
That day, Grant finally saw the girl.
To his surprise, she was beautiful—like a fairy from the woods.
He paused for a moment, only to meet the girl’s annoyed stare. “You can’t sit next to my Milka. My uncle would get jealous. Let’s swap seats.”
Grant, holding his lunch tray, saw that the place was packed. Since Milka and Anya sat across from each other, he figured he’d just take the empty seat beside Milka.
But before he could even set his tray down, the girl across from Milka spoke up.
She slid her bowl across the table to Milka’s side, stood up, and took the seat beside Milka herself, leaving her old seat open for Grant.
“Well, guess I won’t argue,” he said, grinning. “Having lunch with two beautiful ladies—I can already tell this meal is going to be a treat.”
