Chapter 32: Ezra’s In Love
Riley’s POV
“Okay, here’s the thing.’
Silas threw an arm around our shoulders, lowering his voice to speak quickly. “Winning won’t be easy, but it’s not impossible. We need a blitzkrieg. We don’t have the stamina for a drawn-out fight like they do.”
“Agreed,” Odin said with a nod.
“Riley, I’ve seen you on the front line. You’re the fastest among the four of us,” Silas said. Olivia looked like she disagreed, but she didn’t say anything. “So Olivia, I want you to cover Riley later. You two go straight for the flagpole. Odin and I have better stamina and strength, so we’ll intercept the rest of their team. Everyone okay with that?”
Odin didn’t object, but Olivia snorted. “I don’t want to waste my time covering Riley. I can be more useful elsewhere. Like blocking that red-haired girl.”
Silas’s voice turned cold. “That red-haired girl Lisa was last year’s top female warrior. She could knock you out with one punch. You clearly don’t have a good sense of your own strength. And you’re not following my orders.”
Olivia’s face instantly turned red. She stammered with embarrassment. “I-I’m just saying,… even if I can’t block Lisa, at least I could go for the flagpole. Why does it have to be Riley?”
Silas’s expression grew even more impatient. “I said Riley is faster than all of us, including you. Do you really want me to waste time explaining our whole strategy to you right now?”
Olivia looked like she wished she could vanish into thin air. Silas gave her a big eyeroll and turned back to us. Where was I? Oh, right. Riley, go for the flagpole as soon as the game starts. Don’t worry about anything else. Odin, I’ll leave that guy Hansen to you, and I’ll take care of Ezra myself.”
Silas had the strongest build and was the only Lycan. He was undoubtedly the best match for Ezra. No one questioned that. Silas had us repeat our tactic one more time, then let us spread out to warm up a bit.
My gaze crossed the field to the flagpole, and I licked my dry lips.
Half the field. About two hundred meters.
If I could hit my top speed and grab that flagpole, we’d win the game/Ezra would be my slave. I could make him kneel before me and call me master. God, just thinking about it made me tremble with thrill.
Suddenly, my gaze met a pair of green eyes.
It was Ezra. He was standing by the flagpole, stretching his muscles. His tall, powerful build was so goddamn intimidating.
Our eyes met, and he flashed me challenging smile. That smile made him look so freakin’ hot, and also kind of evil. The girls gathered by the side of the field started screaming.
“Both teams, get ready!”
A teacher who’d been pulled in to referee announced loudly. We all took our positions along the center line, poised to spring.
“Ready-START!”
My foot pushed off the ground hard, and I shot out like an arrow.

Silas was right. I was fast. And small. And agile. I could weave through our tall opponents like a bird darting through branches.

Hansen and another huge Lycan didn’t even glance my way. They went straight for our flagpole. I picked up my pace.
But suddenly, a huge shadow loomed over me. Ezra!
He was completely different from his lazy self off the field. When our eyes met, his gaze held a cold fight that was almost frightening.
He lunged at me, like a predator pouncing on its prey. He reached out to grab me.
But suddenly a roar sounded beside me. Silas appeared at my side, slamming into Ezra with brute force. Two equally tall, muscular Lycans collided, like two huge mountains crashing together.
I took the chance to duck and slip right under Ezra’s arm.
As we passed each other, he looked down at me, anger blazing in his eyes. I flashed him challenging smile back.
God, that was a sweet moment of revenge!
I left Ezra behind and charged toward the flagpole. That red-haired girl, Lisa, had been left guarding it. When she saw me coming, she looked both surprised and furious. She bared her wolf fangs at me, letting out a snarl.
Where the hell was Olivia? She was supposed to be covering me. If she’d just tangled with Lisa now, that would give me time to grab the pole and we would’ve won!
But when I glanced back frantically, Olivia was nowhere near me.
Instead she was over by Silas, helping him deal with Ezra.
“I don’t need you here!” Silas roared at her. “Go help Riley!”
But it was too late.
Lisa lunged at me, wrapped her arms around my waist, and threw me. My back hit the ground hard.
BANG!
The pain was so sharp my vision almost went black.
Somewhere in the distance, I thought I heard a whistle, but I couldn’t be sure. Hurried footsteps approached. Then someone scooped me up from the ground and held me tightly against his chest.
“What the hell did you do to her?!”
It took me a second to realize it was Ezra’s voice. He was snapping at his own teammate, Lisa. Lisa looked stunned, standing there awkwardly.
“I-I didn’t do anything, Captain,” she stammered. “I just threw her. And why… why are you protecting her? She’s our opponent for christ’s sake!”
Everyone on the field was staring at Ezra with weird looks. His face darkened. He didn’t answer, just held me tighter and looked down.
“Are you hurt?” he asked me roughly.
“N-No, I’m not,” I said, quickly pushing myself out of his arms and standing up.

What the hell was he doing? I thought he was the one who didn’t want our matebond exposed. If he kept acting so intimate with me in front of everyone, wouldn’t people start to notice?
“Don’t touch me!” I hissed at Ezra under my breath.
“You think I want to?” he snapped back, also keeping his voice low. “I don’t give a damn if you’re hurt. If it weren’t for that stupid…”
He stopped abruptly, not finishing his sentence. But his expression grew even angrier.
I get it. It was our matebond.
While the bond forces me to obey his commands, it also compels Ezra to feel protective of me. When he sees his mate hurt, his instinct is to rush over and protect me.
Fate and the Moon Goddess decided to bind us tightly together, yet we’ve chosen to stand against each other. It was so fucking twisted.
Just then, Silas strode over, grabbed my arm, and said quickly, “We need a timeout.”
“It’s only been two minutes! What kind of timeout is that?!” Hansen protested loudly.
“A pause, then, call it whatever you want. We’re taking five minutes!” With that, Silas pulled me away by the wrist, ignoring Hansen’s angry complaints.
We walked to a corner of the field. Then Silas whirled around, glaring at Olivia, and demanded sharply, “What the fuck did you do?!”
Olivia’s mouth fell open, stunned. I was a bit startled too. I’d never seen Silas so angry and serious before. It was kind of scary, I gotta admit.
Silas took a step toward Olivia, teeth gritted. “You were supposed to cover Riley. Never leave her side for a single step! If you hadn’t been so stupid, we would have won the game already!”
Tears sprang into Olivia’s eyes instantly. She choked back a sob, her voice trembling. “I… I was just trying to help you! Is that wrong? And why don’t you yell at Riley? She’s the one who lost to Lisa. She’s the one who cost us the game!”
“At least she followed the strategy. This is a fucking team effort. It’s not your personal stage show! If you don’t want to cover Riley, you can get the hell out of here right now!”
Tears streamed down Olivia’s face. She clenched her fists, stood there sobbing for a moment, then suddenly whirled around to face me.
“It’s all your fault!” she yelled at me. “You must love having everyone’s attention on you! You annoying, selfish, arrogant bitch! I wish you were dead!”
With that, she turned and stormed off the training field.
I was fucking stunned. Odin called after her a couple of times, but she didn’t look back and soon disappeared into the distance.
God. I couldn’t believe this. Things couldn’t get any worse. We were already one person short, and they were all Lycans. With Olivia gone, our situation instantly became even more dire.
Mocking laughter came from nearby. I looked back and saw the Lycans watching with their arms crossed, including Ezra. He was looking at me with a smirk.

“Hey, you can still surrender now if you want!” Lisa shouted.
“Fuck off!”
Silas said it roughly, then pulled Odin and me in, putting an arm around our shoulders.
“Alright, time’s short. The situation is bad for us. We need to come up with a surprising, unconventional move, or we’ll lose to those bastards led by Ezra, and I don’t like losing.’
He cursed under his breath, then looked at me.
“Riley, I want you to block Ezra when the game starts again.”
WHAT?
My heart skipped a beat. I blurted out, “Why me? There’s no way I can stop him.’
Silas raised an eyebrow at me. “Oh really? But to me, you’re the one with the best shot. Judging by Ezra’s earlier reaction, I almost thought he was in love with you.
