The room upstairs was quieter.
I closed the door and turned. Sophie was standing by the side staring at me, her clothes soaked through and stained.
“Sit down,” I said.
Sophie sat on the edge of the chair near the window, her hands in her lap, her face held no expression whatsoever, she kept staring at me without even moving her eyes or her lips.
Suddenly, her eyes dropped down to her feet serving the idea that she was feeling regretful.
“You were right,” she said. “I should have just left when you told me to. I should never have come here.” She looked at her hands. “Now Serena is angry and your sister is angry and I’ve caused trouble for your entire evening.”

The consequences of her presence were already setting there was nothing to be done to change anything
anymore.
I ran a hand through my hair. Seeing her here had been a shock but having her around meant she was my responsibility. I owed it to her after what she suffered because of my family.
I reached for my tie and loosened the knot, pulling it open until my collar was free. I brought my phone out of my pocket and texted Mark.
“Come to the house and take Sophie to her house.”
“Don’t worry about any of that,” I said, tucking my phone into my pocket. “Fix your dress. I’ve already texted Mark. He’ll come to the house and take you wherever you need to go.”
She looked at me for a minute and then rose up. She stepped forward and then slightly wrapped my fingers around my tie.
“You take such care of me,” she said. Her fingers moved from the lower of my tie and lifted up, her fingers moyed 277 dexterously, loosening the tie completely. “I don’t think I

deserve it.”
“You do,” I said. I looked at her. “My family sent you away, Sophie. Everything that happened to your life after that, the complications, the difficulty, Ethan being born into a situation that wasn’t what either of us planned: that’s the path my family put you on. That’s mine to carry. Not yours.” I held her gaze. “I’ll never blame you for any of it.”
A broad smile toom over her face and she stepped back. Her hand pulled on the loosened tie and she dropped it on the bed, staring at me.
“Are you sure your wife would not misunderstand just how much you care about me?” She asked.
“What matters now is that you need to stay here. Whether or not Serena misunderstands, well, that is my business. Like I said, stay away from her.”
Her smile dropped just a fraction. “Kier…”
“Stay in the room,” I said. “When Mark arrives, go straight down. Don’t stop to talk to anyone.”

dress was ruined, it would be uncomfortable going home in such a dress. “I need to try to get this out,” she said. “Is there a bathroom?”
I nodded toward the door, she glanced at it and then immediately turned towards it. She pushed the door open and went in.
I stood in the room and waited for her to return. I was deeply frustrated. Sophie was right, Serena would misunderstand everything and she already was. Although
I could not tell her the truth the least she could do was believe me.
She had never seen me kiss or even hug Sophie but already suspects us. So, what if I stayed with Sophie for a month, it meant nothing.
The bathroom door opened and Sophie stepped out looking like a mess.
The wine stain had spread across the full front of the dress, bleeding wide and dark into the fabric on both sides. It appeared that nothing she had tried had worked. Her hands moved over the damage. She pressed them flat.

Her head lowered staring at her dress as her hand hovered around it. She suddenly lifted her eyes and met mine. They were glossy, filled with falling tears.
“This dress cost so much,” she said. Her voice already cracking. “I didn’t even pay for it myself, Kieran. It was borrowed. And now it’s completely ruined. I have nothing to wear home.”
I sighed and ran a hand through my hair again.
My eyes looked around the room and stopped on the closet. This was mine and Serena’s room. She had kept some clothes here that she kept here if she needed to wear anything when she was around.
“Take it off,” I said. I walked to the closet and opened it.
Serena was a woman that was a neat freak and sharing her clothes was something she never did. Not even to
Jenna. But these clothes in here were old and she seemed to have forgotten all about them. Moreover, she had so
many other better clothes. No matter how much she disliked Sophie, well, these were old almost discarded clothes, so she would probably wouldn’t care if Sophie Wore it or not.
