Chapter 174

“There is no need for this,” I said while gripping her hand tight. “Not here. Sophie didn’t deserve that.” I glanced over my shoulder where the women had all lined up and ready to say one thing or the other about this situation.
Serena kept talking and accusing me if only she could just grant me a second to explain myself. Nothing happened between Sophie and I it was just a random exchange of clothes.
My train of thoughts reached a dead end Serena turned and looked at me. I met her eyes, red, and filled with tears. The tears fell from her eyes down to her chin and not once did she divert her from me.

“I didn’t deserve my husband going to a room with another woman,” she said. “I didn’t deserve my clothes being given to her. I didn’t deserve standing in front of everyone watching it happen.” She held my gaze. “But here we are.”

hold. Watching her cry was akin to seeing my heart get stabbed a million times.
I swallowed, feeling the dryness of my throat. “This isn’t the place,” I said. “This is a party. There are people here.”
“Did you not realize this was a party,” she asked me calmly, “before you took her to the room? Before you gave her my clothes? Before you walked her out in front of everyone?” She looked at me with her jaw forward and her chin up. “Did that not occur to you?”
I could no longer take my heart caving in like this. I shook my head at her as my fingers slwoly unwrapped from around her worst and instead found its way to the spaces in between her fingers, intertwining our fingers before she could pull away.
“That’s not what this is,” I said. “I need you to hear me. What you think happened in that room didn’t happen. Sophie’s dress was destroyed and I gave her something old from the closet because she had nothing to wear. That’s the whole story.” I said looking at her hoping that my words would actually be believe for the first time.
She was allowed to feel what she wanted to feel but why 276

would I be lying to her about this? I was held back by the need to protect Sophie after what my grandfather did to her. None of this washer fault and it was theresponsibility that had brought problems to my marriage.
She shook her head and I watched another tear drop fall from her eyes. “I don’t want to understand anything.”
“Serena-”
“You can give her the clothes, I’m not interested anymore. I do not want to do this anymore.” She took her hand away, turned around and then walked out of the room.
“Serena, wait-”
But she kept going, showing no concern for me or why I was calling. Why would she suddenly say she was not interested anymore?
I went after her in hopes that I would talk to her and grab and understanding of what was happening in her head. I followed right after her but not once did she stop or turn around. She just kept going luje no one was going to stop

“Serena!” I called her name and people near us turned. I caught up to her at the bottom of the steps and quickly grabbed her arm, steering her to face me.
We were standing in the middle of the lawn surrounded by the beautiful lights and we stood close to the fountain. Under the stars she looked beautiful and her eyes. shimmered like glitter. “Please. Please listen to me. I’m telling you, this is not what you think it is.”
Her eyes were almost the same as it was when she was in the room. The difference was that suddenly the tears were gone. There was just pain in those eyes. Pain that rubbed on me and grabbed and squeezed my her.
“Kieran, I don’t know what you want from me.” She sighed. Stick with Sophie,” she said. “You’ve embarrassed me in front of everyone tonight. Everyone had seen you treat her like a goddess. Everyone will either pity me or just ignore me.” She looked at me, her shoulders straight, her chin up. “I’m tired, Kieran. I can’t fight anymore.”
“I’ve given up“. Do what you want. I don’t care. You’re a free man.”

A sleek black car pulled up to the kerb.
She turned. She opened the door and got in. The car moved into the street and disappeared around the corner.
I stood on the steps.
