I was driving too fast. I needed to go home.
I didn’t know where she went. I didn’t know who arranged that car or who was in it or where it was taking her. She might have gone to see Elan and stay with him just like she did before, or perhaps she went to see her parents or she went to see Misha. I could not tell. I just needed her to be home.
She said she was giving up on me and I had no idea what that meant for our relationship or even for me and Cora kept growling to the possibility that it meant she was going away, she was leaving me.
Those were the words I couldn’t get out of my head.
Why would she say she was tired? We were husband and wife, we were mates. Why would she say she was tired? Why would she say that she had given up on us?
Why were things different? What happened to the chance she was going to give to me? What was going to ppen to

us?
I had nothing on her anymore and there was nothing I could make her stay with. She was free, the one thing I had over her was gone.
It was easy for her to leave now, no wonder she would say she was tired and she had given up on us, simply because she had nothing holding her back.
I arrived at the building and ran straight to the lobby. I took the elevator straight to the floor where our apartment was. The elevator doors opened and I ran inside.
The apartment was empty and dark. I looked around the living room to the kitchen but she wasn’t there.
I made my way over to the bedroom and pushed the door
open.
Serena was laying on the bed. She had changed out of her dress and lay on her side with the blanket pulled to her shoulder, her hair loose, her breathing slow.
The room was dark and the soft breathing from her was

proof she was genuinely asleep.
I stood in the doorway and exhaled in relief.
She said she had given up on us, she said she was done, but she came back here.
Perhaps she wasn’t truly done. Our marriage was not over and all I had to do was give her a reason to stay. Maybe I also had to apologize for the misconception earlier.
I walked to the side of the bed where she was facing, her hands curled into herself. I lowered my body down to have my face next to hers before I took her hand.
She didn’t stir.
“What do you mean you’ve given up?” I asked softly, to myself and the woman who was unable to hear me. “We can’t be done.” I shook my head.
“We’re married, you had said yes.” I held her hand. “You can’t be done. We are supposed to be happy.”
My heart pulled from the inside, filled with regrets. If only my grandfather had not sent Sophie away and now I

had to pretend Sophie’s child was mine when it wasn’t.
I had to act like I cared for Sophie when all I felt was guilt. When the only things existing between Sophie and I was the gratitude I felt towards her and nothing more. The gratitude that almost made me marry her.
But I couldn’t tell this to Serena, she wouldn’t understand. She would tell everyone out of her hate for Sophie.
My eyes fluttered open. I took in a deep breath and turned to the side where Serena was laying.
It was empty.
She must’ve woken up or even gone ahead to work already. I quickly walked into the bathroom, got myself cleaned up and picked up the suit for today. I got dressed and headed out.
Serena was in the kitchen at the counter with a plate of pancakes and her coffee, the housekeeper moving at the stoye. She had her face buried in what she was eating14:36

Watching her, I couldn’t recall the last time I had seen her eating like this in the house.
Was when I had drugged her?
She never ate or drank anything else perhaps thinking she was going to be drugged again or even worse poisoned.
I cleared my throat and walked up to meet her. “Did you sleep well?” I asked.
She simply nodded, still eating.
I sat across from her. “You’re not going to ask me?”
She looked up. “Did you sleep well?”
“Yes,” I said.
“Okay,” she said.
She stood up and moved toward the door.
“Serena.” I got up and caught her arm. “Are we going to

live as strangers in this apartment?”
She stopped and turned around. There was no patience
on her expression rather, it showed she wanted to leave as soon as possible.
“I really can’t do this right now,” she said.
I nodded, understanding she wanted to leave. “Do you want this marriage?” I asked.
Her eyes never left mine. “I don’t want it,” she said. “But what am I supposed to do? You won’t let me leave.”
My heart ached at the resignation in her voice. “Because we’re married,” I said. “And that means something. You can’t give up on this. You have to give me a real chance. I know I’ve made it hard but I’m asking you to try.”
“I tried last night,” she said, “and I realized then I had been stupid to try.”
I stepped toward her. My hands hovered in the space between us. I wanted to take her hand, but her eyes were on my hands but not once did she lift hers. I took her hand. “Nothing happened between me and Sophie. I need

you to hear that. I did not touch her.”
Her eyes did not move from our hands.
“I believe you,” she said. “I believe nothing physical happened. But do you understand that that’s not the point?” She looked up at me. “You stood in front of everyone and you defended her against me and against your sister.” She paused. “I know you don’t love me. I’ve accepted that. But can you not at least respect me? I’m your wife. Why do you treat me like you hate me?”
“I don’t hate you,” I said. I held her hand tighter. “I don’t hate you, Serena.”
“Okay,” she said. She looked at me. “You don’t hate me. But you have so much love for Sophie. Anyone can see it.”
I parted my lips but before then, the doorbell rang.
I looked at the door, then at Serena.
I went to the door and opened it. Fiona stood in the entrance, her coat on, her hands pressed together.
“Hello Alpha.” She greeted with a bright smile.
