Side Story 38-1

Clara

“Seriously, Abel-my life is in danger and this is what you’re thinking about?” I asked, my voice

laced with sarcasm even though my heart wasn’t as steady as I pretended. He slowly lifted his

head from my neck, his lips leaving a trail of heat behind, and fixed his gaze on me.

“You’ve underestimated me for far too long, Clara,” he said in a low, deliberate tone. “My uncle

believes he’s always several steps ahead of everyone else. But the truth is, I’m always the one

moving before him.”

His eyes softened just slightly as they dropped to my lips, lingering there with intention. “Your life isn’t in danger,” he added quietly. “And it never will be. Not while I breathe.”

“I hear you,” I said, forcing myself to step back, “but I still need to go now.”

That earned me a slow, knowing smile. “You really know how to provoke me, don’t you?”

“Do I?” I whispered, tilting my head innocently. The shift in his expression was immediate-his pupils darkened, his jaw tightening.

“You’re staying,” he decided. “At least until Marc arrives.” He took my hand before I could protest

and led me to the sofa.

“And you’re seriously not busy?” I asked with a smile on my face.

He sat down and pulled me onto his thighs with ease. “Busy? No. Not at all.” His hand slid to my waist. “Now stop talking, Clara-and kiss me.”

By the time exactly an hour passed and Elder Marc finally arrived, Abel had made very good on that command. My lips throbbed slightly, swollen from his relentless attention, my senses still reeling.

When Marc was ushered into the office and finally looked at me properly, his eyebrow arched in unmistakable amusement. “You really should have cancelled our session,” he remarked dryly, directing the comment at Abel. I could only smile, my cheeks warm.

As always, Marc proceeded with his lessons-guidance on restraint, presence, and what it truly meant to stand as a Luna. When he was finished, he excused himself and left.

Almost immediately, Abel retreated into work mode. It was his pattern-whenever he realized how close he’d come to crossing a line, he buried himself in responsibility to regain control.

“I’ll be heading out now,” I said softly.

He nodded, a restrained smile still on his face, and let me go without protest.

Outside, Randy was waiting, arms folded. “Looks like someone had a productive afternoon,” he

joked.

I laughed despite myself. “You might want to keep an eye on him. He’ll need your help.”

Randy chuckled and dipped into a respectful bow. “Go rest, Luna.”

I acknowledged him and walked away-only to be stopped by raised voices echoing down the

hallway.

A man’s harsh tone cut through the air, accompanied by a baby’s distressed cries.

“But I told you I tried,” Pamela sobbed. “Clara isn’t the same anymore.”

“If you don’t do exactly what Father asked, you’ll regret it,” Alan snapped. “You’ll be treated far worse-understand that? What did I ever see in you to even sleep with you?”

My feet moved before my mind could catch up.

You and your father are cowards, always using someone else to do your filthy work.

It’s not like the Sinclairs didn’t deserve what they got for how they treated me-but my name is

being called and I’ll not just let it go.

I stepped into view, and with their heightened senses, they noticed immediately..
