Book 2 Chapter 26
Book 2:Chapter 26
Idara
I looked away from him, then sighed deeply, bracing myself before telling the truth.
Clair
“Marilyn was my friend,” I said, finally meeting his eyes, “and she’s the reason I left where I used to
live.”
He raised a brow. “And why is that?” he asked, clearly interested.
I shrugged, knowing I had to choose my words carefully.
“I told people she had a secret child because she provoked me,” I said quietly. “I did it in a way that ruined her upcoming wedding.” I paused, then let it out fully. Yes, I destroyed Marilyn’s chance of
marrying Jax.
“And why would you do that?” he asked. His face was blank, impossible to read.
“Because she was insulting me in front of her guests,” I replied. “She always did things like that, but that day I snapped. I let her secret slip.” The memory replayed vividly as I spoke to Mr Chester.
He was the first person I had told this-apart from my mom.
I wouldn’t blame him if he judged me. I really had messed up.
“And that’s the only reason she’s looking for you?” he asked.
I nodded. “Yes. Because her wedding was canceled.”
I didn’t add the rest out loud-how she later ruined my life by taking back everything she’d given me: my house, my job, even my boyfriend of two years.
He nodded slowly, turning away from me. I could only imagine how disappointed he must be in
what I’d done.
“That still doesn’t explain why she’s tracking you,” he said as he walked to a drawer and pulled out a
file.
I exhaled quietly. That was Marilyn for you. To her, I had betrayed her, and she wouldn’t rest until she had her pound of flesh-until I fell at her feet and begged. That was the kind of person she
was.
So no, I wasn’t surprised she was still looking for me.
“Her fiancé seems to be someone I know,” he said, and immediately my head snapped toward him, my attention locking onto the way his back muscles flexed as he moved.

“Now I understand,” he continued calmly, “why he once spoke about how his fiancée’s friend helped
him avoid the worst mistake of his life.” He turned back to face me, a file in his hand.
“I have everything here about your friend Marilyn and her family,” he went on. “If I want them
crushed, I can do it.”
My eyes widened at that.
“So just say the word, Idara,” he said evenly. “Do you want her crushed?”
I swallowed hard.
I had expected him to judge me. To tell me what I did was cruel, unforgivable-inhumane even. Instead, here he was, offering destruction like it was nothing.
Did I want to?
Yes. She had embarrassed me countless times in public.
Yes. She had pretended to like me, only to turn around and judge me behind my back, telling everyone who would listen.
Yes. There was a time she lied that I stole her jewelry because I was jealous of her, and suddenly everyone started treating me differently-picking on me, whispering. I hadn’t understood why until someone finally blurted out the truth.
But still… I didn’t want her crushed.
I had already done enough damage. She lost Jax because of me. And as terrible a friend as she had been, she had helped me before-more than once. That was the reason I stayed so long, following her around like a puppet, excusing things I shouldn’t have.
“No,” I said at last, my voice low but firm. “I don’t want her crushed.”
He heard me clearly. He nodded once.
“Good,” he said. Then his eyes darkened. “But if she ever finds you and tries anything funny, I’ll stain my hands with her blood.”
I hiccupped softly. The way he said it-so calm, so certain-told me he meant every word.
“But-“I started, then paused. “Don’t you think what I did was wrong?” I asked. I was genuinely surprised by how completely he had ignored my confession.
“I don’t know, Idara. I wasn’t there,” he said, tossing the file back into the drawer.
Seriously? I don’t think he even cared.

Book 2 Chapter 26
Claim
Before I realized it, a small smile spread across my face. Maybe I never really wanted him to judge
me the way I’d expected. The realization brought a strange warmth to my chest.
“Now it’s time to tell you about the council,” he said.
The smile died instantly from my face as he turned fully toward me and walked closer, his
movements calm and deliberate.
“But first,” he added, “I’ll tell you about me.”
I raised a brow when he stopped right in front of me. He lifted his hand and tucked a few strands
of my hair behind my ear, his fingers brushing my skin.
“You’ll be confused,” he said softly, his fingers lingering, warm against my ear, “but I want you to listen without asking questions. When I’m done, you can ask anything you want. Just listen.”
I nodded.
“Good.” He gave a small smile, but it vanished almost immediately. “I am not Julio Chester.”
I remembered him telling me to call him Helio. Was that what this was about?
“I’m Helio Chester,” he continued. Oh-it was.
“Julio was my brother.”
The moment he said it, my breath froze. I had promised not to ask questions, but-he wasn’t Mr.
Julio Chester?
“My brother Julio is dead,” he said calmly, “and I am merely standing in for him until his son, Julian,
comes of age.”
My eyes widened.
