Book 2:Chapter 33
idara
I frowned slightly but took the phone anyway. “Hello?” I said into the receiver.
The line stayed quiet for so long that I started to wonder if this was some kind of prank.

Then a woman’s voice came through-smooth, confident, almost magnetic. “You must be Idara.”
I didn’t recognize the voice at all. “Yes, that’s me. And you are…?”
Another deliberate pause before she answered. “I’m Eleanor. I’m hoping you’ve at least heard my
name by now.”
My eyes widened as recognition hit. Eleanor. Helio’s so-called fiancée. My grip tightened
instinctively on the phone.
I swallowed hard. “Yes, I’ve heard of you. But I’m curious-why are you calling me?”
She let out a soft, knowing laugh. “I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you’re intelligent, Idara. Which means you already know exactly why. Our world isn’t anything like your sad little human one.” She paused for emphasis. “So consider this your only warning for now: stay away from Alpha Julio. He belongs to me. Being Luna is my birthright.”
I pressed my palm to my forehead and took a slow, steadying breath. The absolute last thing I needed right now was a call from the dead alpha’s ex-fiancée trying to stake her claim.
“Look,” I said evenly, “like you just pointed out, our worlds are different. And no-the human world isn’t pathetic. But if you have a problem with this, you should be talking to your Alpha Julio, the one who claimed me and not the other way around.” My fingers clenched harder around the phone. “I
have work to get back to. Goodbye.”
I pulled the phone away from my ear and handed it back to the young woman who handed it to me, who had remained standing there the whole time with her head slightly bowed.
She took it without a word.
already had more than enough chaos in my life. I didn’t need to add a jealous werewolf fiancée to
the list.
But apparently trouble had a way of tracking me down no matter where I went-like I was cursed
or something.
I walked back into the office. Eliot and Faye were already settled at their desks. The second I dropped into my chair, a long, heavy sigh escaped me.

Then-oh crap.

I glanced down at my phone and realized the call was still connected. Had Mom heard any of that exchange with Eleanor from my side? My thumb shot to the end button. I hung up fast and set the phone face-down on the desk.
The last thing I wanted was to drag her into more worry. But judging by how this day was going, I- was probably already doing exactly that.
I cleared my throat, forced my shoulders back, and turned my attention to the work in front of me.
As for Jax and Marilyn… I was going to have to find a way to confront my demons someday. No
more running.
Helio
“Hello, Alpha. Mr. Jax was spotted at your mate’s family home earlier today.”
I nodded once, freezing mid-step. I hadn’t gone into the office-Danae had practically ordered me
to rest after yesterday’s intense heat.
“Noted. Keep watching him. Report anything unusual.”
I ended the call and slipped the phone into my pocket.
Why was Jax suddenly so desperate to see her? Months ago I’d heard his wedding had fallen apart after he discovered his fiancée had secretly given birth to a child she’d never told him about.
And somehow, Idara had been the one to expose that secret.
I didn’t particularly care how or why she’d done it-truth had a way of surfacing eventually. You
can’t build a life with someone you claim to love on a foundation of lies. That kind of deception
was minor compared to the real threats I was dealing with.
The council, for one.
I’d already given them clear orders, but Calisto was as stubborn as they came. He wouldn’t drop this easily.
I reached for a file on my desk and flipped it open, scanning the pages again.
My brother’s death-Julio.
It hadn’t gutted me the way it might have someone else. Yes, I’d lost my brother. But grief wasn’t the emotion that dominated. Investigation was.
My eyes landed on the name circled in red: Silvia.

An otherwise healthy alpha dying in the middle of sex with a woman wasn’t exactly unheard of.
but it still raised questions.
A knock sounded at the door.
“Come in,” I said quietly.
The door opened and Violet stepped inside. Her posture was rigid, formal-until her gaze met
mine. She dipped her head in a quick bow.
I studied my brother’s widow for a long moment before speaking.
“Were you ever told the real cause of your husband’s death?”
Her head snapped up, eyes wide with surprise and something close to alarm. She clearly hadn’t expected the question.
She chewed the inside of her cheek, then slowly shook her head.
“No. They told me he died from an illness.”
Exactly as I’d suspected-they’d kept the truth from her too.
“Was he unwell before that?”
She frowned slightly, then nodded. “Yes… but it came on suddenly. Just a cough out of nowhere.” Her expression twisted with remembered pain. “Then one day I was simply told he was gone. Just like that. Julio was the strongest man I’d ever known.”
