Book 2:Chapter 37
Helio
I could tell he was genuinely interested, but a man like him, scheming and calculative, was
someone I always handled with caution.
Did I believe him when he said he only wanted to warn Idara? Yes, I did.

But a man of his status wouldn’t personally come all this way just for that. Still, I kept my voice
calm.
“A lot can happen in a couple of weeks,” I said.
He let out a low laugh, almost from his belly.
“I see,” he said. “So you’re not going to satisfy my curiosity.”
He leaned back, sounding almost defeated. “I really thought we were friends, Julio. But suddenly,
you’ve changed.”
This wasn’t the first time he’d started suspecting me.
The truth was, Julio and this man had once been incredibly close-close enough that whenever
Julio had business in his city, he would prepare a woman for him.
He had done the same for me once.
That night, I’d walked into a room to find a naked woman lying on my bed, clearly placed there for
my use. I’d been shocked. Later, I found out he was the one who’d arranged it-as a way to
welcome Julio.
Which meant one thing.
If he truly knew Julio that well, then he might know things others didn’t.
“Well,” he said lightly, lifting his drink, “I hope Idara knows the kind of man she married.”
I raised a brow and nodded. “Indeed, Jax. What can I say? You know me too well.”
He burst into laughter.
“But Julio,” he added casually, “how is your precious Eleanor?”
I only smiled.
“The last time I checked, you were about to grant her wish of becoming Luna. What changed?” he asked suspiciously

I kept my eyes fixed on him, studying every flicker of expression as I replied, “I found out the child’
she bore for me wasn’t mine.”
Even as the words left my mouth, I wondered why I’d said them.
But I needed information-any kind-and his reaction was worth it.
The surprise on his face was unmistakable. But surprise at what exactly? At the thought that Eleanor never even had a child for Julio? Or was my assumption wrong?
Then he chuckled softly.
“What are you saying?” he said. “That boy looks more like you than your actual son.”
I didn’t show it, but my heart skipped.
So I hadn’t been wrong after all.
“Did
you just make that up so you could break things off with her?” he continued, amused. “You bad guy. You were always saying you didn’t like her, I see now it was more serious than that.”
I raised a brow.
That was new.
Julio didn’t like Eleanor?
That was shocking, especially considering Danae had told me Eleanor was his number one
mistress.
At least now I knew, the child truly belonged to Eleanor. Everything finally clicked into place. I could feel it, right at my fingertips, that I was getting closer to the truth… closer to who had killed Julio.
The truth was, I’d been digging for years. But back then, when I couldn’t stand on my own because
I was always on surveillance, and I’d gotten little to no leads. Now that I’d awakened the power
within me, I could move more openly. Still, it wouldn’t be long before they noticed what I was
doing.
“You should know Eleanor can be a real pain in the ass,” I said.
He chuckled low. “Well, did you get everything you wanted from her uncle?”
Her uncle?
What exactly had Julio wanted from Calisto? Had he wanted anything at all?
I shook my head, carefully pushing for more information. “That man is a hard one.”
Jax placed his glass down slowly.

“Why does it feel like I’m the one always steering the conversation?” he said, brows furrowing. “And with all the drinks I’ve been giving you, you should be out cold by now.”
I could tell-with the way I was talking makes him more alert, more suspicious.
So I stood up abruptly. His eyes followed me.
“Well, I should be heading home,” I said, glancing at my watch. “My wife would be dying for me to
come back.”
He laughed. “Since when do you care so much about women? Idara must be an exception.”
I looked down at him. “Well, Jax, I’m a very possessive man. Refrain from calling my wife by her
first name.”
His expression darkened as he stood. “Where have I seen that look before?” he murmured, rubbing his jaw. “Ah-when you were being possessive over your wife Violet. And now it’s Idara?”
He shook his head, clicking his tongue. “No… the new Mrs. Chester,” he corrected with a smile.
The longer I stayed, the more irritated I became.
“Whatever. I’m leaving,” I said, picking up my phone from the table.
Darren stepped closer. “This way, Al-sir,” he corrected quickly.
I nodded.
Before leaving, I glanced back at Jax. “I’ll see you soon.”
He nodded once as I turned and walked away.
As soon as the car pulled up at the mansion, I got out in a rush. I hadn’t called Idara all day, and I
wanted-no, needed, to see her.
Her mother must have told her about Jax suddenly showing up at their house, and also her things
had been moved without her knowing.
The truth was, when I spoke with her mother yesterday, I’d taken her number. She later called to tell
me earlier today that she had asked Idara to stay with me because she wanted her daughter
