Letting Idara go to work was risky, but I had no idea how to explain that to her without causing an argument. Knowing her, she would immediately protest and insist on going anyway. For now, I decided to allow it, but I would make sure her security was increased.

The fact that she was human made everything worse. She was far more vulnerable than the rest of us, and our enemies would not hesitate to use that against her, just as they once used my own

weaknesses against me.

Yes, my Alpha power had finally awakened, but that didn’t mean everyone would suddenly fall in line or accept my authority without question. If anything, it meant they would become even more

determined to challenge me.

And now that they knew I had a weakness, they would exploit it.

My mate.

The thought alone tightened something painfully in my chest. If they ever turned her into a target just to get to me… I didn’t know if I could endure that.

The bathroom door opened, pulling me from my thoughts.

Idara stepped into the bedroom after finishing her hot bath. Through our mate bond, I could sense the faint ache in her body. Guilt flickered through me.

I might have been a little too rough with her last night.

Sometimes I forget she isn’t like us. She’s human-more fragile, more delicate-and I need to

remember that.

“Why are you making that face?” she asked, watching me closely.

I quickly forced a smile, masking my thoughts. It worked every time.

She smiled back instantly.

“I was just thinking about how sore you might be,” I replied.

Her cheeks turned red almost immediately, and she looked away shyly.

“Of course I am,” she muttered, refusing to meet my gaze.

I chuckled softly.

Then her expression suddenly changed.

“Oh… there’s actually something I wanted to talk to you about.”

She turned toward me again, her face now serious. I nodded, giving her my full attention.

“Your ex-fiancée-if that’s even what I should call her-sent someone to give me a phone yesterday.

The moment she said those words, every muscle in my body tensed. The hairs on the back of my neck rose, but I forced my face to remain calm.

“What did she want?” I asked quickly.

Idara shrugged slightly.

“She basically told me to let you go,” she said simply. “I just thought you should know.”

Inside, my mind was already racing.

I knew Eleanor well enough to understand what that call really meant.

It wasn’t just a warning.

It was a threat.

“And what did you tell her?” I asked, needing to know. Her response would determine how Eleanor

would react next.

“I told her she had a problem with you, not with me.”

For a moment, I almost smiled.

It was the perfect answer.

But it also meant Idara had just placed herself directly in Eleanor’s line of fire.

Eleanor was not the type of woman who accepted rejection. She was obsessive when it came to

getting what she wanted, and she would destroy anyone who stood in her way.

Which meant only one thing.

I needed to act fast.

Perhaps it was time to call another council meeting. I wouldn’t sit back and give anyone the

opportunity to come after my mate.

Not now.

Not ever.
